Good morning Vietnam!
Todays' (May 25th) top song of 1965 was:
All the leaves are brown (all the leaves are brown)
And the sky is gray (and the sky is gray)
I've been for a walk (I've been for a walk)
On a winter's day (on a winter's day)
I'd be safe and warm (I'd be safe and warm)
If I was in L.A. (if I was in L.A.)
California dreamin' (California dreamin')
On such a winter's day
Stopped into a church
I passed along the way
Well, I got down on my knees (got down on my knees)
And I pretend to pray (I pretend to pray)
You know the preacher like the cold (preacher like the cold)
He knows I'm gonna stay (knows I'm gonna stay)
California dreamin' (California dreamin')

Re: Vietnam
On This Day
25 May, 1966
The Cultural Revolution begins in China starting a period of prolonged political instability within one of North Vietnam's major allies.
The Cultural Revolution, formally known as the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical movement in the People's Republic of China (PRC) launched by Mao Zedong in 1966, and lasting until his death in 1976. Its stated goal was to preserve Chinese communism by purging remnants of capitalist and traditional elements from Chinese society. The Revolution marked the effective commanding return of Mao — who was still the Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) — to the center of power, after a period of self-abstention and ceding to less radical leadership in the aftermath of the Mao-led Great Leap Forward debacle and the Great Chinese Famine (1959–1961). The Revolution failed to achieve its main goals.
The Cultural Revolution was characterized by violence and chaos. Death toll claims vary widely, with estimates of those perishing during the Revolution ranging from hundreds of thousands to millions.
Red Guards destroyed historical relics and artifacts, as well as ransacking cultural and religious sites.
In December 1978, Deng Xiaoping became the new paramount leader of China, replacing Hua Guofeng, and started the "Boluan Fanzheng" program which gradually dismantled the Maoist policies associated with the Cultural Revolution, and brought the country back to order. Deng, together with his allies, then began a new phase in China, by initiating the historic Reforms and Opening-Up program. In 1981, the CCP declared and acknowledged that the Cultural Revolution was wrong and was "responsible for the most severe setback and the heaviest losses suffered by the people, the country, and the party since the founding of the People's Republic." In contemporary China, differing views exist about the Cultural Revolution. Among some, it is referred to as the "ten years of chaos"

Re: Vietnam
Good Afternoon Vietnam!
Sometime during the Vietnam war, some G.I.s where drinking beer and smoking weed and this came on the radio and blew their minds ... (you guess the name of the song and artist, if its not clear from the words) ...
I'll tell you this...
No eternal reward will forgive us now
For wasting the dawn
Back in those days everything was simpler and more confused
One summer night, going to the pier
I ran into two young girls
The blond one was called Freedom
The dark one, Enterprise
We talked and they told me this story
Now listen to this...
I'll tell you about Texas radio and the big beat
Soft driven, slow and mad
Like some new language
Reaching your head with the cold, sudden fury of a divine messenger
Let me tell you about heartache and the loss of God
Wandering, wandering in hopeless night
Out here in the perimeter there are no stars
Out here we is stoned
Immaculate

Time magazine published a cover story "The Negro in Vietnam" profiling African-American participation in the war which claimed that the [per capita] ratio of African-American to white combat troops was double that for the U.S. population as a whole, their combat death rate was therefore higher [per capita], and there were disproportionately fewer African-American officers.

Re: Vietnam
Good morning Vietnam!
I think I disagree with the Times claims, at least the numbers don't add up. Unless I am missing something.
"African Americans made up approximately 12% of the US population in the 1960s. They accounted for 16.3% of all draftees and 23% of all combat troops in Vietnam."
So looking at the numbers:
Whites made up 88% of the US population in the 1960s. They accounted for 83.7% of all draftees and 77% of all combat troops in Vietnam.
"In 1965, African Americans filled 31% of the ground combat battalions in Vietnam."
So looking at the numbers:
In 1965, White Americans filled 69% of the ground combat battalions in Vietnam.
"In 1971, African Americans made up 14.1% of all US casualties in Vietnam."
So looking at the numbers:
In 1971, White Americans made up 85.9% of all US casualties in Vietnam.
NOTE: No sources I have list Mexican-Americans, Asian-Americans, or Middle East-Americans.
Conclusions, by math alone the Times assertions are incorrect.

Re: Vietnam
If we start injecting politics into the Vietnam thread, we risk the ensuing discussion getting out of hand, and the thread being locked.
Even questioning and interpreting and agreeing (hah!) what is "fact" can be political. ("Lies, damned lies, and statistics.")
Yes, there is political content, direct and indirect, explicit and implied, inherent in the presented historical narrative itself and the photo selections (also some of the song lyrics).
Much of what I post is debatable, sure. But I pilfer the text from other "objective" sources, and try to tell the story evenhandedly, good and bad, from all sides, no partiality. I strive to keep my personal views out of it.
The slippery slope is nearer than you think.

Re: Vietnam
Good morning Vietnam!
Today's top song on May 27th 1965 was ...
Well since she put me down I've been out doin' in my head
I come in late at night and in the mornin' I just lay in bed
Well, Rhonda you look so fine (look so fine)
And I know it wouldn't take much time
For you to help me Rhonda
Help me get her out of my heart
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda yeah
Get her out of my heart
She was gonna be my wife
And I was gonna be her man
(Oh Rhonda)
But she let another guy come between us
And it shattered our plans
(Oh Rhonda)
Well, Rhonda you caught my eye (caught my eye)
And I can give you lotsa reasons why
You gotta help me Rhonda
Help me get her out of my heart
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
Help, help me Rhonda
Help me Rhonda
