Suggestion: Subscription model for DLCs

Post by Vesku80 »

Hi everyone,

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share an idea that I believe could benefit both the community and the developers of the Modern Operations series.

As we know, the Modern Operations series has several DLCs that add significant value and depth to the game. However, for irregular gamers or those who might not want to commit to purchasing each DLC individually, it can be a bit overwhelming and costly.

I suggest that Matrix Games consider adopting a monthly subscription model for the Modern Operations DLCs, similar to what Paradox Interactive has implemented for Hearts of Iron 4. This model could offer the following benefits:

Accessibility: Gamers can access all available DLCs for a manageable monthly fee, making it easier for new and casual players to experience the full range of content.
Flexibility: Players can subscribe and unsubscribe as needed, providing a more flexible approach to enjoying the game.
Increased Engagement: A subscription model could encourage more players to stay engaged with the game over the long term, as they would have continuous access to new content.
Steady Revenue Stream: For the developers, this model could provide a more predictable and steady revenue stream, allowing for better planning and development of future content.

I believe this approach could make the Modern Operations series more accessible and enjoyable for a wider audience. I'd love to hear what others think about this idea.

Best regards, Vesku

The DLCs are generally inexpensive. I don't see how this would benefit me. It seems like it would cost me more money. And since I play offline when traveling the ability to own and download my content is a key driver,

I agree with tylerblakebrandon.

DLCs are not expensive, and we need only purchase those that interest us. A subscription might help someone decide whether or not they want to buy a particular DLC, but when we own our own DLCs we can take them anywhere, anytime - especially to places where there may not be any internet access (which is something I do reasonably frequently).

This is simply an over-engineered solution to something most people don't view as a problem. Now a time-based license for the core game might be something to consider. I'm not sure I have ever seen anyone complain about the cost of DLCs. But a lot of uninformed people on Steam complain about the cost of the core game. Of course, there are a few standalone DLCs around that could be used for this also.

That's a hard NO from me.

I dislike paying subscriptions for any software (save for Anti-Virus programs), so this would not appeal at all.

I think that Vesku80 is proposing an unpopular solution to a CMO problem that does not exist.

If you add up all the DLCs, showcases, etc. without any discounts, it totals over $200. I'm never going to buy them all, but I would pay around $15 a month to have access to them for a limited time. I don't propose changing the old system, but from a limited sample, there doesn't seem to be much appetite for this...

That sure sounds like a losing proposition for Matrix.

That's the way it's done with HOI IV, but honestly isn't that the exception rather than the rule?

I don't think that's a worthwhile proposition for either the player base or the publisher, especially since the player base is almost certainly smaller than what Paradox has

The Command DLCs are not essentials, with changes to the gameplay like with Paradox games. They are ONLY scenarios/campaigns.

One need not purchase all the content at once. Spacing it out to your affordability is completely feasible, especially with all of them being significantly discounted right now on Steam.

If it incentivises the creation of more DLC, I'm all for it. I don't mind paying for good content, but the current rate is about once a year, way way down from the heyday of Command: LIVE.

Presumably if the devs made more money, they'd be incentivised to make DLC more frequently.

I definitely would not be in favour of this - I generally dislike the subscription model for games, and dislike it even more for CMO
