Ballistic Missile Defense (Exceeding SAM Attack Speed)

Post by DWReese »

I've noticed something new (at least for me) in watching ships defend against incoming ballistic missiles.

Before, SAMs were restricted in being able to shoot at targets traveling at speeds faster than they were allowed did NOT shoot.

Now, in the terminal phase, all kinds of SAMs start shooting at the incoming ballistic missile, even though their missile speed limit is exceeded.

I looked at the ballistic missile, and it was still traveling at over 6000 kts. I then checked some of the SAMs, and they were listed at NOT being able to shoot at something traveling that fast. Those that I am talking about (like the Rim 116, Rim 162, and SM-2) are all in the range of 2300 kts., yet they were firing at the ballistic missile.

I assume that this makes sense, being sort of like shooting a hand gun at an attacking jet, and while it doesn't have much chance for success, it is now at least possible of hitting it.

So, is this something new? (I don't remember seeing this at all.) Or, did I stumble upon a bug?

I believe that this is new. Perhaps someone can officially confirm this. I never saw anything written about it.

This was introduced in 1328.7

TWEAK: Extra factor added in vs-aero DLZ checks: Target vertical speed. This enables SAMs to have expanded shot opportunities against fast-diving targets (HGVs, high-diver weapons like Kh-22/32 etc.)

Thanks for the response.

I didn't participate in the beta, so this was the first that I have seen it. It's a nice addition.

The other part is that now the max-target-speed checks in ABM engagements take into account not the target's current speed, but its projected speed at the estimated intercept point (since the max-target-speed property represents the ability of the fuze & warhead to deal with a fast target during impact).

Ballistic targets have a generally well-predicted trajectory, and they tend to slow down A LOT as they re-enter the atmosphere, thus re-entering the effective shot envelope of a lot of AAW weapons. (Actually killing them however is another matter altogether).
