OK, let's wait for a pic of the ship entering the port.

Supposedly this picture ends the Makarov issue, after one Ukrainian official said she was hit, and then another denied it ("misunderstanding").

...You may or may not believe me, you are more likely not to believe me.
That would be an absolutely correct assessment of the the situation.

So, Vsevolod Bobrov's hitting was also fake news?

Looks like incendiary munitions being used at Azovstal, possibly phosphorus, possibly thermite

But what damage may cause this ammunition if you are deep underground? Well, I hope they are.

No that is not incendiary or phosphorus ammunition, or thermite. The Twitter frenzy that this one has cause is ridiculous and I have not entered the fray.

This is what you see with cluster munitions, the sparks you are seeing are residual from the ejecting charge. The bomblets are free falling, possibly/probably slowed and stabilize by a cloth streamers. My guess is that this is from a BM-21 Grad but I could be very wrong there.

What surprised me by this clip is that the fuze function of follow on rounds is impacted by the first rounds so you get a gradual creeping back of the weapons' effect. This is a problem that we solved decades ago and I am surprised that it is still occurring with this salvo.

If you're wondering, I have some experience with artillery which may be evident by my forum name.

But it looks similar to what they say is incendiary ammunition showed in this video in Syria, RBK-500-ZAB-2.5SM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C9f8Ff8M6E

While the cluster bombs with more explosions is:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YegxUegrI_4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnd3IYH7x1o

And to end the nightmare the thermobaric rockets:

Phosphorus looks like this. In particular at about 17 & 24 seconds with a lot of billowing white smoke afterwards

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rB-nZj6sTs

The purpose of WP is to generate smoke, fire and burning stuff is a side effect

Incendiary bombs like napalm are like this. Time stamp at 5:35

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxkz9uvl1VM

The purpose is to burn stuff, defoliate and cause smoke

Thermobaric looks like this . Time stamp 1.54

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SV4GUo9CcSs

The purpose is to overpressure defences and defenders

Thermite is like this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gEZOwB0TZI

I cannot find a air or shell delivered thermite video but you certainly don't see the type of intense fire in the original video. The purpose is to burn through metal and concrete.

I think it is more like what you see at 1:04 here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ipr_hPAcR_Q

Shot at low light the DPICM bomblets leave a trail of sparks from being ejected from the carrier shell.

I suppose the original video could be thermite, a pretty ineffective thermite though. These weapons are only 'illegal' as is being widely claimed, when used against troops (or civilians).

I rather suspect the rounds are simply an ICM type bomblet (cluster munition) fired at low light. Which many people claim are illegal as well except that neither the Russians nor the US has ratified that so they can fire them all they want.

Makes no difference really, except for one secondary the damage seems minor.

Thanks for the review :)

Here is more, like you say the bomb is cluster but the submunition is incendiary, thermite. I had the idea that cluster bombs were full of small explosives, but no, they can also be filled with small incendiaries.

https://rogueadventurer.com/2012/11/27/ ... munitions/

Regarding thermobaric, besides rockets, there are also bombs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUqVbKlSx0c

Confirmed by Reuters (that it happened in Syria not in Ukraine).

https://www.reuters.com/article/factche ... SL1N2V42M5

This thermobaric bomb may be bought, like anything, if somebody is interested:

http://roe.ru/eng/catalog/aerospace-sys ... ab-500pmv/

By the way, this bomb is not in the database, I see:

ODAB-500PM FAE

ODAB-500ShL FAE (Parabrake)

I just discovered this type of munition fired from the BM-21 GRAD, its the 9M22S. An incendiary munition but not phosphorus or napalm based.

https://en.missilery.info/missile/grad/m3-21

Some video in this tweet https://twitter.com/hdevreij/status/152 ... z6CN_ar52w

And a bit more info here: https://mil.in.ua/en/articles/not-phosp ... n-ukraine/

Learn something new every day... This is probably the munition used in the Azovstal video

That helps put things in perspective. With the exception of the Moskva (granted that is a BIG exception) all losses are covered by some reasonable depth in other ships. Not a bad score for Ukraine with no navy to speak of but not a decisive blow.
