How large should I make my game?

I've had this game for a while, but I never committed to it, partly for unfortunate technical issues, but mostly because I could never get my head around the proper scale of a given generated scenario. I've browsed the forum a little, and I understand I should play the ready-made scenarios. Once I've gotten over that hump, though, is there a good rule of thumb for the ratio of sector size to combat power? Whenever I generate a scenario, I think I've either overcrowded the sector or else lost my units in an empty German countryside. Maybe there is no satisfactory answer to this question, but I'd appreciate the input of more experienced players.

Just as a funny comparison, the attack width of a MRR against a defending (prepared) enemy is between 3 and 8 kms. In the 15x15 kms maps you could in principle fit a complete MRD in. Thats a whole lot of firepower. Overcrowding is the way to go!

I think AB shines best when there are multiple battalions for both sides. It takes experience and some art, I suppose not really different that the experience and talent a real life brigade/regiment/division commander requires, to move around that many forces. It's worth the effort though.

It comes down to taste, I for that matter prefer battalion size games, but those can go from 4,000-5,000 points in late 1960s up to +10,000 points in 1980s, with size being about 3,5km x 5km.

Major troop density is why I think ammunition consumption is less of concern in real-life battles, as in game a fair number of players expect their formations to engage a number of targets way above they would do in actual combat.

What's the measurement unit of the Sector Width and Sector Height values on the Select Sector screen? Meters? In the manual it clarifies that the numbers in the top right show the sector size in map cells/pixels.

I checked in-game, and the units of measurement in the Select Sector screen are clearly meters. Thanks for the suggestions!

Brigade/regiment/division commander has subordinate commanders though.

Correct, but it still takes skill and experience to ensure those subordinates have a plan, understand the intent, and then go execute it. While AB currently lacks those types of subordinates, it still allows the player to plan, maneuver and fight a large force. No other ground combat simulation does so much, so well, in capturing maneuver warfare at this level.
