The Hungarian War of Independence

An interesting game was developed by the Hungarian Ministry of Education several years ago, and made available as a free download. It concerns the 1848-49 war between Austria and Hungary. Now, the only problem is it can be played on XP, but I'm not sure of its compatibility with more modern OS.

In any case, it's a great game, and offers a complex situation if you play as the Hungarians. They can operate on interior lines, but the Hungarian Defense Forces (the Honved) aren't strong enough to defend the entire country. Their situation is somewhat like the CSA in the ACW. However, the Hungarians are faced with a timeline. If they don't defeat the Austrians by summer of 1849, the Russians enter the fray with an army of 200,000 men to assist the Austrians.

It is a very interesting war which is little known in the USA. As a matter of fact, one of the Hungarian generals (Richard Guyon) moved to the US and fought with the Union Army in the ACW.

One of Matrix' games ("For Liberty") offers the 1848 war as one of its scenarios.

I highly recommend it. Hey, it's free, so you've got nothing to lose by giving it a try. Now, the game system is unusual, so read the manual! The game map is cool-looking, too. It helps if one can find some historical references about the war.

As the Hungarian player, one cannot attack recklessly. You should concentrate on recruitment and assigning the best commanders to your maneuver forces. It takes awhile to organize the Honved. There is a lot going on, so take some time to get familiar with the game and the map. It is NOT for beginners. Don't underestimate the AI either!

its good but unlike the later games For Liberty and Napoleon in Italy, it doesnt have tactical battles, only the operational campaign -still good though!
there game For liberty also includes an earlier conflict too in Hungarys history the Hungarian Rakoczi Independence War - the eastern theater of the War of Spanish Succession from 1703 to 1711
