Background Graphics

In Hornet Leader PC, you command a squadron of the U.S. Navy’s elite F/A-18 Hornet Strike Fighters! You select the pilots and arm the aircraft based on real-world mission briefings. Once you reach your objective, you evaluate threats, and do what needs to be done to destroy the target!

Background Graphics

Post by Veldor »

Just curious if it was ever considered to put a background graphic to cover up all that ugly black space? A faded down campaign specific graphic (so as not to contrast too badly with foreground graphics - A bit like some webpages do) or perhaps a simpler green-felt lined tabletop look? Or anything to take up the space?

I get the impression that (at least the actual combat sections) were graphically designed to invoke a simplied heads down display look and as such I approve of the plain, black void and the simple, one or two color icons for everything. Now, if we're talking sprucing up the game/squadron maintenance menus, I won't argue.

I just worry that once certain things are graphically updated, it'll start to cascade and while I agree with the 'Out of 8' reviewer that the graphics won't entice anyone who wouldn't already buy the game and one could make a few relatively changes that would improve the game's visual appeal, I'm inclined to believe the current scheme works for what it set out to do.

I'm all for making it optional, though.

Weird, I tried coloring the TargetArea.jpg file that seems to be the "background" pic, but it just doesn't work, it's like the game doesn't use it ! [:(]

If you look closely that graphic is very different than the one actually displayed during the game. The one in the game has fancier diagonal diveders between areas.

A nice background is something we're looking at for future patches or versions of the game later on. Something related to the type of mission you're flying, and a different one for each type of campaign.

I think that one's only used in a certain setup screen or something.

Hi Derek, why not look at a game like Armageddon empires and port the whole "card" look to your game? Cryptic Comet's efforts are absolutely artistically astounding. IIRC the HL board game came with such cards?

I'm truly finding the whole spatial element confusing as things stand, ie" what the sectors of the game board represent, time vs speed vs range as depicted etc.

But yes. I agree with the mob that as things stand, it looks monotonous. I'm still a big fan of the "solitaire system" viz "AI" though. Keep it up.

Adam.
