WOW

Post by wobbleguts »

Hi,

Bought the box set of MWIF and it arrived a few days ago. I was expecting a box with a loose DVD, promotional materiel for other games and a paper manual that I would need a magnifier glass to read.

Happy to report I was completely wrong. What I got was 3 hardback manuals (approx 30cm by 30 cm) and a DVD stuck to the inside cover of the first one.

Never seen such good quality manuals for a computer or board game. Thank you Matrix!

Question. What is the difference between a blue and red factory?

RAW:

A red factory is usable if you control it in the production step.
A blue factory is usable if you control it in the production step and it
is either in your (current and/or 1939) major power’s home country or
in an aligned (not conquered) minor country.

And:

Blue and red factories can be destroyed by strategic bombardment
(see 11.7). If there is a choice, destroy blue factories first.
You may also destroy a blue factory if an enemy land unit occupies
a hex in the country. To destroy a blue factory, one of your land
units must be in supply in that hex during the victory check step (see
13.8). Each land unit can only destroy 1 factory stack a turn. If the
hex has 2 blue factories, you may only destroy both in the same turn
if you have 2 land units there.

I'd like to second the "Wow" factor here!

I purchased the download version from Matrix during a sale last year, installed it, fired it up and was like a little overwhelmed and thought I'll get back to this someday.

Well, last week was 'someday'. I have just finish reading all the text and picture tutorials and am on Chapter 7 of the 14 video tutorials and I have to say reading and watching the videos is a most excellent way to learn and discover just how awesome this game really is!

I have yet to try out the interactive tutorials (they are next on my todo list), and am looking forward to finishing out the last 7 video tutorials.

So far I feel I have a pretty good understanding of the game and am very impressed with all the details in this game!

Thanks to all that were involved in creating the game, text tutorials and videos.

It will take a while to master this game that is for certain, but just having the text and picture tutorials and the video's has defiantly made it so I could not only understand the basics of the game, but appreciate the game even more so.

Well worth the sale price I paid for. Perhaps one day I can even play against some humans...

Let's be honest here.

Those books are, quite simply, sex on a stick. They are seriously shiny, they look like serious books from a distance... then you open them up. Those pages - whoever chose that design - well I want to marry him and have his babies. What do you even call that colour/effect. Simply superb. Those books and I have been together now for 9 nine years and the relationship remains as strong as ever. Love ya

I don't have the books, but I am assuming the PDF's are the same? Man I have yet to play this game, or do the interactive tutorials, and only have finished the 7 chapters of videos and have 7 more to go...its like a nasty teasing or that feeling you used to get when you were a kid and at Christmas you had only one 'real' box you wanted to open, what was it going to be this year? Third Reich, Tobruck, or could it be The Longest Day??? And then when you carefully remove the wrapping and discover your new game, slowly removing the shrink wrap and then reading the front and back of the box before slowly removing the top lid and then examine each piece in the box ever so slowly and lovingly...

Well that is what I feel I am doing with MWIF....really enjoying the depths of this and can't wait to push a button...

It depends what floats your boat of course but I love World In Flames because:

- Seriously, where can you get a strategic WWII game that plays the whole war? There are very few and to be honest Eminem puts it best when he warbled "All you other Slim Shady's are just imitating" MWIF is the real Slim Shady

- Where can you get a strategic war game where you can play with every warship (real and some what-if) from light cruiser up (there are a couple of exceptions but otherwise it is every ship).

- The counters are shiny, colourful and simply scream naughty things at you very loudly

- The maps.... the one thing that lets WIF down is the map. But the map Steve has produced for MWIF is, quite simply the BESTEST. EVER. FACT. It is a work of art and frankly I don't really understand why Michelangelo's work still adorns the Sistine Chapel. It should be replaced by Steve's artwork here

- The game is sooooo cleverely done. Unlike SC where so much is scripted and just 'happens'. Nothing in MWIF happens without the players making it so. You command the armies, navies and airforces and you have to plan and think ahead constantly, reacting and making things happen.

- The game tries to have just as few a rules as it can get away with to allow players to do pretty much what they want. However, each option has effects on US entry and so neither side can simply do what it wants without sanction

- There are a very few rules that provide the basic framework for what the Allies and Axis can/can't do - and that framework gives every game a WWII feel regardless of whether ahistorical actions are taken by either side.

- The game has been designed to be won by either side. That does of course mean there are some liberties taken with counters, but that is fine - just don't play if you want ultra realism.

- There is little that is pre-ordained. The mechanics of weather, turn length, who goes first, and of course dice etc. ensure that the best laid plans can go quickly awry.

MWIF, its fantastic!

Warspite,

I could not agree with you more. I was a board war gamer back in 1976-2015 (retired from all that now as aging) and been a computer war gamer since 1996ish. I really do like MWiF, its right up there with CWIE2 and SP:WW2/MBT in my opinion.

Love how the windows are re-sizable and I can do things like so:

I agree! The 3-vol set is certainly something that one can sink their teeth into.

And apparently, my two "dogs of war" (Susie on the left & Cally on the right) agree! Above them are what two of my three MWiF books look like after I had to repair them with duct tape after Susie and Cally got a hold of them. They literally sunk their teeth into them. [:D]

Just finished the first interactive tutorial. I am just amazed by the depth and breath of the interface, the detailed information and all the help files in just about every form.

I am starting to realize the genius behind this UI design approach for this superb game and am further amazed.

Their sentence was communed and they both received a pardon. However, if it had been my deluxe version of WiF CE then it might have been a different story. [X(]

Just kidding ... my wife complains that I love those two dogs more than her. [8D]

Actually, I believe I have included a Help button for every form. In most cases the text shown is taken directly the Players' Manuals.

Glad to hear that more players are approaching to the World in Flames universe.

It is a game in 'human reach' (from my perspective) without the mental-psycho details that some computer games have (in fact this is a tabletop game translated for PC)!

The rules are navigable and understandable without having to do arcane math of supply decreasing per hex away from a railroad, efficiency recovery, and whatnot.
