Norfolk Island

Shouldn't Norfolk Island be more than a 0(0) Port and 1(0) airfield? It's 40 square kilometers and has a decent port. Has anyone from Oz visited this place?

As far as I am aware, Norfolk Island does not have a decent port. In fact I don't think it has any good harbours at all. I just did a quick search on google and found some information at the site http://argosy.nf/port.htm which states:
Port Facilities

Due to Norfolk Island's rugged coastline and the lack of a sheltered anchorage, ships anchor about 1km offshore. Cargo at Norfolk Island is unloaded by the ships derricks into lighters which are then towed ashore by motorised launches.

Well I lived there for over three years. Yes a magnificant place. There is no harbour to speak of, just a jetty/wharf. So a 0/0 there is correct!

That place was the harshest penal colony in the British empire for some time, or did I remember something wrong? And some Pitcairners were resettled there (they regretted it later)? Perhaps I confused Norfolk with some other island, but I think not.

you just gotta sit back in wonder once in awhile . . .

This "internet" stuff is really amazing! a guy posts about a flyspeck island in the middle of nowhere, short time later someone posts definative info on said island, hours later someone posts "I lived on flyspeck". Infriggin-credible!

now, where did i leave my teeth????

Okay guys, just to fill you all in.

The descendants from the Mutiny on the Bounty and Tahait were on Pitcairn Island and when that Island became tooo small to support them all, Queen Victoria gave them Norfolk Islank to live on. They were transported on an HMS ship (name escapes me) from Pitcairn to Norfolk. However, about 1/2 of the the Islanders were home sick and relocated back to Pitcairn Island. So you have to related communities a long way from each other. Oh, by the way, Pitcairn or Norfolk Island language (depending on where you live) is the youngest recognised language in the world. Its a mixture of old English and Tahitian.

Whilst Pitcairn and Norfolk are about the same size, Norfolk is 3 miles by 5 miles, Pitcairn is mostly mountain range and very little space to live and grow foods etc.

Hope this fills in some of the blanks for those with some historic curiosity.

Isn't a jetty/wharf supposed to be at least size 1 port or perhaps a 2? People have been living there since before the invention of the plane so there has to be some method of delivering goods. Speaking of aircraft, how are the airfields? It would seem since they run domestic flights the airfield should be more than a 1(0).

No ship, other than a 6 foot tinnie can dock at the jetty. Okay, it can take a larger craft, but you get my drift. The supply ships that go to the island anchor some way off and they use tenders to ferry the goods to and fro. There is a reef/breakwater preventing any sizeable ship in getting close to the jetty.

I am not sure if this represents a 0/0 or not, but its not a very swift operation of delivering goods shoreside.

OK, thanks, I figured someone had been there and saw the place. Not sure how this doesn't at least get a size 1 port though. Plus the port size has an effect on how much supply the place can hold. The island is a bit more robust than a rating of 0(0) - 1(0) would indicate. If a place like Lunga can be made into a size 5 port and size 7 airfield, Norfolk should be a little big than it currently is.
