My fetish scenario

Combat Command is Boku Strategy Games World War II operational game. strategy games played warfare on a hex playing field with turn-based game play utilizing company-sized units. Game design aspects include turn phases, combat resolution, unit design, scenarios and artificial intelligence.

Yes, simple and terribly effective mechanisms.
Quality scenarios.
Maybe it suffers from a too generic appearance, which does not facilitate immersion.
For example the absence of names (sherman) of the armored vehicles.
The editor is remarkable but again the absence of tree units (numerical values) is disabling.
However, the ease of creating new scenarios, short and nervous, could help to revive the game ...

Little necro here, but you're right. Even if someone would have made a non-NATO counter mod, just for some (storefront) images, it probably would have 1) gone over better and 2) be more popular than it is.
Hell, somebody could make one and put a couple of yt vids up...never know what might happen with it.
