Hannibal's Moutain Adventures - AAR

I enjoy the game so tremendously that I have decided to report on one game. I play and record the game "live" so I have no idea of the outcome yet.

I will write this from my beginner's perspective - so if you are an experienced player, you will not learn much. But maybe some undecided readers get some more info on how the game works. Below are the initial settings that are used.

Turn 1: Recruitment in Carthage

I will be a bit more detailed in describing each turn at the beginning of the game and then move to less detail once the general move structure repeats itself.

Turn 1: Hannibal prepares in Spain for crossing the Alps.

Turn 1: Hannibal reaches Gaul

Turn 1: Reinforce Hannibal (option card)

Turn 1: Recruitment

Roman Turn 1: The Roman's have not attacked Hannibal yet. They moved their leaders in defensive moves and to aid their own recruitment. They have also used an option card to raise further units ("Scratch Legion" I believe). Every time one player uses an option card, his opponent get's the chance to respond. We could decline to play a card but chose to play "Reinforcements" instead which places one more unit into Carthage.

Great to see you're enjoying the game so much, Chocolino. It is indeed a little gem. Card play in this game is so important. I tend to use them as quickly as I can, which leads to trouble later.

Thank you for reading Gary and oldspec4. I am struggling myself still quite a bit with card play. Hording them too long may require "mandatory play" later which cannot be the ideal point in time while wasting them unnecessarily early is of course the other extreme. So I am looking for the golden middle and feel I am only moderately successful with it. I just hope that for many cards, the exact point in time is not that crucial (e.g. for the reinforcement cards). The Revolt cards are a different story....

Roman Turn 2: Hannibal's ambush, the pitched battle and cavalry pursuit.

Roman Turn 2: Hannibal wins the battle - but not the war. Otacilius retreats to Placentia and licks his wounds where he is replaced by Varro (4) soon during the Roman Elections.
