Simple Survey

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

I would like to have a better idea of which modes of play are going to be used.

There are 5 modes of play:

Solitaire - you play both sides and make all decisions.

I will use this to test specific gaming situations. I won't "play" this way. 0%
Head-to-head (Hotseat) - two players use a single computer, with the players taking turns moving their units/making decisions using the same mouse and keyboard.

I don't have anybody local to play this way. 0%
AI Opponent - the player takes one side and the Artificial Intellengent Opponent plays the other.

I would possibly play this way to test out the capabilities of units and game mechanics. I would not play games this way. 0%
NetPlay - 2 to 6 players with each player having his own computer; there are game 'sessions' where all the players log into the game and communicate their decisions using the internet.

This is the way to play WiF. It may be hard to get 4-6 players together at the same time. 20%
PBEM - Play by email for 2 players, with all decisions communicated via email (an option to temporarily switch to NetPlay if they so desire).

This is the way that I will play most of my games. 80%
Which mode of play do you expect to use?[&:]

Could you please put your answers in percentages? It would be nice it the percentages added up to 100% too.[;)]

Short and simple answers would be best for this thread. If there are other discussions on this topic, I would prefer a new thread (or some other existing thread) be used.

Thanks for your efforts Steve. I appreciate it.

Netplay is all I expect to play. I may explore the new methods of play, but I'm pretty set with a pbem game and the AI will mean nothing to me.

The survey itself concerns me. I hope the work on the AI will NOT be cut back if there are not enough votes. It seems to me from reading the very good monthly updates that there does not seem to have been much testing on the AI this close to the release date.

Should I be concerned? [:(]

I might use solitaire play to forecast specific assault-type scenarios, but this would be restricted to serious competition. Effectively one-off, so I list it as 0%.

I think I ran a similar survey in the summer of 2005. Last week I realized I was working with a pretty poor understanding of how the game was going to be played - at best it was very outdated. As a marketing research professional (12 years) I believe that anocdotal feedback should be supplemented by a closed-ended quantitative survey to fully understand what the market wants.

There is no 'voting' going on here. If that was what I wanted, then that is what I would have asked for. For instance, I have used voting paradigms before in this forum - often in fact - to make design decisions. The purpose here is to have a better answer to the question: "what do the customers want?"

Solitaire: 5%
Just to do some tests

Hotseat: 0%
I dont' think my wife will play with me, she founds the screen shots ugly, but she never played the board game.

AI Opponent: 60%
Most of the time, even if I have another campaign started again a real opponent.

NetPlay: 5%
Only if I can find some time on a regular basis each week to play, otherwise it would be frustrating for the other players
It would be my prefered mode if I can find at least an evening by week to play.

PBEM: 30%
Easier to find time to play if I mustn't be in front of my computer at the same time as the other player.

NetPlay/PBEM will depends on the time I'll have to play, and can change during the following years.
