Highlights: Small naval action at Broome

Allied ships lost:
AM Horsham

Enemy ships sunk:
PB Hinode Maru #20

Northwestern Australia:
Naval lsearch has spotted a small convoy at Broome. Despite the massive presence of the RN at Exmouth, the fuel situation permitted only a minimum effort of one lone DD sent on a full-speed-run to Broome. HMS Inconstant depth-charged a lurking sub on the run-in and dispatched a PB and damaged a few xAKLs.
Near Corunna Downs, Aussie tanks forced enemy troops into a hasty retreat.

SWPac:
Old CLs bombarded PM once again, causing light damage.
Old CAs bombarded Milne Bay, finding the missing /C part of the IJA 18th Division.
Hunters became the hunted when I-170 torpedoed and sank AM Horsham on ASW patrol near PM.
B-17s from Coen bombarded PM after muscling aside Oscars on CAP, three fighters downed for no losses.
A deliberate ground attack at PM reduced the forts to level 2 but at the costs of many disabled squads.

SoPac:
B-17s from Suva visited Funafuti and ran into Rufes on CAP, losing two brand-new B-17Fs and causing less than 200 casualties on the ground.

October 06/07, 1942

Highlights: Army CAP takes a day off and the Navy suffers the consequences

Allied ships lost:
APD Talbot
APD Dent
APD Waters
xAP Nairana

Japanese Home Islands:
In the East China Sea, SS Halibut encounters a fat convoy full of large tankers and modern AKs - but selects to shoot and miss a DD.

Northwestern Australia:
B-25s on ground support near Port Hedland have flown into a CAP trap of Zeros from Broome, 2 bombers lost.
DD Inconstant has rejoined the Combined Commonwealth Fleet at Exmouth, the TF must leave station to refuel at Perth and to split-off ships due for upgrades or scheduled for transfer to the ETO.

Northern Australia:
AV support has reached Daly Waters and a squadron of Aussie Kittyhawks can now provide some CAP.

SWPac:
APDs have been despatched on FT runs with supplies to PM. Alas, they lingered around in daylight and got jumped by LBA from Lae - scratch three APDs. Where was the CAP from Terapo?
A convoy bringing engineers and supplies to Terapo also attracted Betties and Vals and suffered one xAP sunk and others damaged. Where was the CAP from Terapo?
Well, it turned out that some stoopid commander had switched the Terapo fighters from LRCAP to local CAP without setting a local CAP percentage. Ah, snafued again...
On the ground at PM it is not looking good either, the Aussies made no progress and suffered disproportionate losses. Mostly disablements but not being in possession of the base hinders recovery. I think the Americans at Terapo must come to the rescue, but that will be slow going through jungles and swamps.

SoPac:
BB North Carolina and escorts bombarded Noumea, causing only light damage.

Homefront / Rear areas:
The Allies are still way short of tankers and AOs. Although all available tankers are busy shipping fuel from the US to Sydney and from Abadan to Perth (via Cape Town), there is barely enough fuel at the major Australian ports to keep the Allied fleets off Exmouth and off PM operating. In fact recent operations have sucked dry Cairns and Townsville, the northernmost ports with rail connection to Sydney. I hope fuel will move-up this turn, otherwise I won't be able to lose more APDs off PM.

Highlights: Allies blundering along, Japanese carriers off Exmouth

Allied ships lost:
DD Van Galen
DMS Wasmuth
xAP Katoomba
xAP Marella
xAP Malaita
xAP Zealandia
xAP Matua
xAKL Kooyong
AM Gladstone
xAKL Minnipa

CBI:
Another CAP SNAFU, this time in the IO. Two Dutch DDs have been sent on a recon bombardment of the Japanese-held coast just south of Akyab, counting on "leaking CAP" from Akyab for protection. Problem - the Akyab fighters on CAP had been reigned-in to range 0. Miss Betty took advantage - scratch one Dutch DD.
Recon has spotted a Japanese unit near Lashio containing over 450 AFVs - looks like a Japanese Tank Division has arrived in Burma! I have a Corps-sized formation advancing from Katha to Lashio which includes the 7th Armoured Brigade, which will leave the theater in a couple of weeks. I'll try to use it before I lose it. The supply situation however is not good due to the absence of roads on the Burma-India border, but the monsoon will end on October 15 and I hope the situation will improve.

Northwestern Australia:
A supply convoy and a FT task force have been hit by carriers planes at Port Hedland and near Exmouth - looks like at least two enemy carriers are lurking off the coast. PBYs on naval search covering the 0°-90° sectors have spotted nothing, will adjust the search vectors the the West. Luckily the RN at Exmouth had been forced to RTB to Perth for refueling the turn before!

SWPac:
All available USN CLs old and new as well as B-17s bombarded and bombed PM in support of the Australian ground forces ashore.
Enemy air attacks against convoy at Terapo continued, this time intercepted by CAP. Overall this turn about a hundred enemy planes have been destroyed against 20 own fighters. Unfortunately many attackers broke through and the Allied Navies lost more ships. At least I gained a couple of fresh aces.
The USN amphib gaggle has been sent to PM carrying reinforcements - a Corps HQ, tanks and arty. One the way I-158 managed to put two fish into BB New Mexico. 24 points of major float damage, the ship will stay with the TF. The US carriers are in support, providing CAP and ASW. Eleven (!) IJN subs have been spotted in the hexes around PM - I'm afraid further losses are unavoidable. But you cannot make an omelette without breaking some eggs - and the three Aussie Divisions besieging PM must be supported. More ASW TFs have been ordered into the area, and more fighters have been sent to Terapo to provide LRCAP over PM, and an Anson squadron trained in ASW has been moved to Terapo as well. Now AV support is lacking at that base, transport planes have been pulled from the Daly Waters supply runs in order to fly more AV support to Terapo.

Re: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J): Fighting for PM

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

October 10/11, 1942

Highlights: Reinforcements landed at PM without further catastrophes

Allied ships lost:
APD Lawrence
AM Ballarat
xAKL Wollongbar
xAKL Coolana

Japanese SRA:
SS Sculpin found but missed a tanker convoy of Bataan. Other Perth-based boats made their presence felt off Balikpapan, off Miri, off Saigon and off Quinhon, but no sinkings so far. Damned torpedoes...
SS Albacore has found a convoy with a peculiar composition off Soc Trang near Saigon:

Japanese Ships
BB Yamashiro
BB Fuso
BB Mutsu
DD Yamagumo
PB Taiko Maru
AMC Nosiro Maru
xAP Dairen Maru
xAP Kobe Maru
xAP Montevideo Maru
xAP Buenos Aires Maru
xAK Venice Maru
DD Isonami
DD Fubuki
DD Samidare

Looks like an invasion force to me, picking-up troops in the SRA for an attack on ???

Northwestern Australia:
No trace of enemy carriers found.
Betties have sunk a small convoy seeking shelter from CVs at Port Hedland before it could disband into port.
Other Betties attacked Australian ground forces near Port Hedland. The lack of an airfield at Port Hedland is painfully evident, but the shoestring conditions do not allow a quick solution.
The Aussies managed to push the Japanese troops deeper into the desert nonetheless, but will not pursue further until an airbase can be made operational at Port Hedland.

SWPac:
Reinforcements ashore at PM with the loss of only one APD to sub torpedoes, no air attacks except a futile night attack by a handful of Betties. The amphib shipping and the CVs will retire towards Australia, escorted by the numerous ASW-TFs. The list of ASW contacts by air and surface forces is several pages scrolling long, each enemy sub must have crash-dived a dozen times per day! Some subs have been hit by air or escorts, but no kills. I hope the forces ashore will now suffice to capture PM.

Re: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J): PM liberated

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

October 12/13, 1942

Highlights: PM liberated, Port Hedland pounded

Bases liberated:
Port Moresby

Allied ships lost:
14 PT boats

CBI:
Tojos have conducted sweeps over our troops operating between Katha and Lashio, followed by Lillies on ground attack. Both encountered Hurricanes on CAP, both sides lost a pair of planes.

Northwestern Australia:
Port Hedland has been attacked by a Japanese SAG - 2 BB, 3 CA, CL DDs. A total of 14 PTs on patrol have been sunk without a scratch suffered on the Japanese side, despite low moonlight and overcast reducing visibility to a mere 2000 yards. The bombardment also damaged the PT boat tenders moored at Port Hedland and caused a number of casualties and moderate supply losses. I hope this is not the beginning of a counter-landing, Allied reinforcements are still 200 miles away marching overland and without sufficient air cover the RN cannot do much.

Northern Australia:
Daly Waters can't seem to attract any supplies, the garrison is starving. I may be forced to reduce the troop level and abandon any hopes to recapture Darwin by the overland route.

SWPac:
While the CVs retired, the amphib shipping stayed at PM because I forgot to stop the unloading orders. Luckily the Japanese air units in the area appear to be weakened by losses, only a few Nells at night and a few Vals in daylight came over and laid their eggs on the BBs which shrugged them of. Enemy subs have been kept at bay by the escorts, obtaining a number of solid hits on I-170 and RO-64. The continued unloading of supplies may have contributed to the prompt fall of PM in the first attack of the reinforced Aussies.

Re: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J): Fighting for PM

Post by BBfanboy »

Some players fly supply into Daly Waters by transport and by bomber aircraft. OK for aircraft that are still in training and not ready to be sent to the front lines.
I found that landing supply at Port Augusta seems to get more traveling up the rail line to Alice Springs and onward to the bases on the dirt road. Supply starting out from Sydney is drawn in many different directions so not much gets up the central Australia route.
And now that you hold PM, it may be feasible to slip a few small xAKLs into Darwin to trickle supply south (assuming you still hold Darwin! :P ).

Darwin ist in the hands of the Empire, the overland advance from Alice Springs to Tennant Creek and Daly Waters is aiming at Darwin but it is a minimum effort sideshow for the moment, posing a threat in order to keep Japenese troops pinned down in a defensive posture. Some transport squadrons and a couple of Wirraways are flying supplies but it's a drop in a bucket. The limiting factors appart from supplies are AV support and fighter cover, there are only three US Army groups at the moment which need to cover Merauke, Terapo, PM, Horn Island, Coen, Queensland ports and Suva. I have a few Wildcats helping out, but replacement airframes are still wanting, some carriers still field the F3 and F3A models. When more fighters become available, I may make a jump from Merauke to Bathurst Island and then to Darwin.

October 14/15, 1942

Highlights: Port Hedland suffering

Allied ships lost:
AGP Aldebaran
AGP Eridanus
APD Gregory

Enemy ships sunk:
-

CBI:
Dutch submarine KXVII has encountered a fat convoy near Phuket going north - reinforcements for Burma for sure. Unfortunately the torpedoes missed.

Northwestern Australia:
Port Hedland has been bombed by Netties, causing a few casualties among the troops of the 4th Aus Cav Brigade. Then Sallies hit the port, sinking two Dutch AGPs. Little can be done about it, the airfield construction is at only 8% due to a lack of engineering assets and without air cover I cannot risk a convoy to bring-in more engineers. A handful of PCs
try to fast-transport the odd engineer squad but the heavy assets are still a long overland march away.

Northern Australia:
Daly Waters just can't seem to gather any supplies, the offensive against Darwin remains stalled.

SWPac:
Old USN CLs bombarded Milne Bay with little effect, sidestepping several lurking enemy subs and a dozen Betties on night naval attack.
I-28 has torpedoed APD Gregory near Cooktown, the victim sank a day later.

SoPac:
The enemy appears to reinforce New Caledonia. S-36 has torpedoed AMC Bankok Maru near Belep Island north of Koumac, and our local agents reported that DD Satsuki has hit a mine at Noumea.

Homefront / Rear areas:
Many USN and RN ships have upgrades to perform, the fleets will return to major ports over the next few days and remain unavailable for at least three weeks.

Highlights: First bombing raid by Allies against Lae

Allied ships lost:
DD Perkins sunk by SS I-26 near Port Moresby

Northwestern Australia:
Port Hedland bombed repeatedly - but I have found some fighter-bombers that have the range to provide LRCAP, they have been ordered to Exmouth.

I think the game lets bombers have too much accuracy during port attack on stationary ships. Surely AA would interfere with some of the bombing, and unknown wind direction and speed should cause some bombs to miss. But it is unlikely to change in the current final update to the game, so short of a house rule limiting the number of bombers on port strike after turn one, disbanding at a port in range of enemy aircraft is risky. :(

Highlights: Port Hedland bombarded and IJA bombers ambushed, more sweeps over Lae

Enemy ships sunk:
SS I-28 is reported to have been sunk near Cooktown
xAK Hasuna Maru is reported to have been sunk near Pamekasan

Japanese SRA:
SS Snapper torpedoed xAK Hasuna Maru near Pamekasan in the deep water off the eastern entrance to Soerabaya.

CBI:
I have not reported it before, but for some weeks artillery duels have been going on in Burma near Lashio, near Kalemyo and near Bhamo. Mostly ineffective, or even more costly for the Allies despite quantitative and qualitative advantage clearly on the Allied side. Must be the forts and low exp of the Allies.
Akyab expands airfield to size 5. I'm itching to start sweeping Magwe, but despite the end of the monsoon season, thunderstorms keep the Hurricanes and Warhawks grounded turn after turn....

Northwestern Australia:
Port Hedland suffered another naval bombardment by 3 CA, a CL and DDs, adding a few hits to the smoldering wrecks of the PCs bombed the turn before, making sure they continue to burn and sink for sure.
Sallies tried to add more bombs but this time got intercepted by Beaufighters on LRCAP from Exmouth. The unescorted bombers were easy meat - 10 destroyed.

SWPac:
ASW forces have hit SS I-28 repeatedly near Cooktown. SS I-172 got hit near Portland Roads, but got away.
SS Tambor has torpedoed xAP Teiko Maru near Manus, the target is on fire - hope it burns up.
6 USN DDs - including DD Perkins unsunk - bombarded Milne Bay causing negligible damage.
Perth expands port to size 7 - which will help rearming the RN battleships operating in the area.
Lae has been swept by the B-Team for acceptable results:

A6M2 Zero: 2 destroyed
A6M3 Zero: 1 destroyed
A6M5 Zero: 11 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 3 destroyed

Re: "We want the big ones!" DBB-C vs IdahoNYer (J): Debacle over Lae

Post by LargeSlowTarget »

October 28/29, 1942

Highlights: Debacle over Lae!

CBI:
Local agents report that xAK Matsue Maru has been mined at Batu Pahat - British and Dutch subs have been taking turns mining Malakka Strait at least twice per month.

Northwestern Australia:
No Sallies this time, but Zeros sweeping Port Hedland - one Zero and four Beaufighters went down.

400 miles due north of Exmouth, Dutch SS O16 on its way from Perth to the DEI has come across a Japanese carrier force and launched 6 torps at CV Akagi - all missed.

This is bad news, the RN is at Port Hedland escorting badly needed construction forces. The combat ships will return to Exmouth and what LRCAP that base can provide while the convoy will unload as much as it can before being sunk. To complicate matters, Nells managed to put a torp into BB Resolution, limiting her max speed to 18 knots which means the TF cannot reach Exmouth during the night. There will probably a carrier strike on slow and under-gunned (AA-wise) BBs next turn, with only some Martlets, Kittyhawks and Beaufighters to offer LRCAP - if it arrives. I dread the next combat replay... The good news is that the TF managed to avoid several sub contacts on the way in - I hope the same for the return leg!

Northern Australia:
Daly Waters expands airfield to size 2, which increases the supply cap. Hope this helps.

SWPac:
In the jungles between Terapo and Salamaua, US troops have ejected a Japanese delaying force and resumed their march to the north coast.

SS Finback has torpedoed xAP Teika Maru - already hit SS Tambor last turn - near Truk. It should go down now for good!

More USN DDs bombarded Milne Bay for slight damage. For the moment only a handful of DDs, old CLs and the CLAAs are available, the balance of the USN is in the yards for October upgrades or has returned to port in anticipation of November upgrades.

After the Lae sweep last turn, recon reported the enemy airbase empty, so I have sent the heavies to crater the runways - all three available groups. However, the report proved false, the airbase had NOT been evacuated by the Japanese. The unescorted heavies tried to muscle their way through the CAP but suffered:

A6M5 Zero: 4 destroyed
A6M5 Zero: 2 destroyed on ground
Ki-43-IIb Oscar: 3 destroyed
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 2 destroyed
Ki-44-IIa Tojo: 1 destroyed on ground

Records are incomplete, in total, 25 B-17Es and 12 B-17Fs have been lost!

The USAAF 4E bomber force in the Pacific is out of the fight for at least three months.

October 30/31, 1942

Highlights: Sacrifice at Port Hedland

Allied ships lost:
xAP Kajang, xAP Van Cloon, xAP Matang, xAP Bontekoe, xAP Tawali sunk by air at Port Hedland

Northwestern Australia:
The RN has sprinted back to Exmouth under LBA cover, damaging SS I-159 on the way.
The unprotected convoy at Port Hedland managed to unload all troops before the expected air strikes by Netties and KB sank all ships. Well, you can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs...
Naval search has found KB six hexes off Port Hedland and another TF a hex behind containing two APD types - will there be a counter-landing at Port Hedland? If so, I breathe a bit easier, since the III Australian Corps HQ and reinforcing combat troops have arrived at Port Hedland after their long march from Exmouth. However, with only 7k supplies at hand, the situation remains tense.

SWPac:
Milne Bay bombarded again by two CLs plus DDs.

SoPac:
A DM on its way from Suva to Noumea to deliver some presents sidestepped torpedoes launched by SS I-16 near Nadi - I have decided to let the mission continue despite the early discovery.
