Revival of Tinian airfield

Post by Panjack »

Interesting article on Tinian, logistics, and more:
The remote Pacific airfield used to launch the atomic bombings of Japan during World War II is being revived with a different foe in mind: China.

Runways emerging from the encroaching jungles on the tiny island of Tinian, a U.S. territory, are part of a sweeping shift in how America’s military would respond to a possible conflict in Asia.

Hmmm. I'm glad I'm not living on Kadena Air Base anymore. Sounds like it would be in one of the first Chinese volleys if it ever came to that.

Hmm, kinda spooky. My pop was briefly stationed on Tinian in 1945. If memory serves he was either in between air group assignments (Bon Homme Richard and later Randolph w/ VBF-16) or perhaps just some shore leave.
Anyway, I still have a postcard he saved with a rough pencil drawing he made from the beach on Tinian of ships off the coastline. If I find it I will take a pic and post it.
