Minor issue with automated ship construction

Post by belmenel »

I've got my construction ships automated still, as so far they seem to be rather intelligent in their decisions, and the ability to cue up projects in the expansion manager makes them quite useful on their own. However, I had a construction ship decide to build a research station near a black hole. While I definitely appreciate this, it built it using an obsolete design (the starting one, if it matters. and I think I actually deleted it, not just marked as obsolete.) instead of my more effective current designs. Not exactly a major issue, but I thought I'd let you know. Been playing 4x games for a while, and this is the best thing I've come across since SotS. I'm quite impressed with it, and with a bit of dev support, it could be amazing.

RE: Minor issue with automated ship construction

Rather than create a new thread, I'll post my problem in this one, since it also involves construction ships.

Occasionally, and at the start most frequently, my construction ships won't be able to get all the resources they need for their constructions right away. They'll go off and start building the thing anyways with what they do have, and then stop after it gets to the components it can't build. This is all fine, but they appear to stay stopped indefinitely at this point, and will never finish construction even if the resources are now available to it. They should go off and try to find the resources on their own at this point. The workaround is to cancel their job and then tell them to repair whatever they started building (repeat until they can find all the resources), but they should be able to do this without my intervention. Not sure if this counts as a bug or a feature request, but it is annoying.

Agree, DarkWraith, I'd like them to be smarter about that too. Out of curiosity, which race and starting setup was this with?

Ok, I think this is a known issue with Zenox. They start with some special unique shields that only they have, but the shields need some rare resources that you typically do not start with (Dilithium, I believe). Unfortunately these shields are in all your designs. Best thing to do with Zenox is to find a source of Dilithium and build a mining station on it before you do anything else, that should fix things for you. If you have any further issues, you can also try a different race until we get to tweaking the Zenox starting resources.

That's kinda hard to do, not many planets seem to start with Dilithium crystals.  I'd try editing your home system to include some ocean planets (which tend to have dilithium).
There are 10 types of people in the world:

Those that understand binary, and those that don't.

Was playing as Quameno for mine, and I'm pretty sure I had the resources for my normal research station, as I had been building them manually with no trouble.  Perhaps the automation has no way to tell a new design is a research station, and so defaults to the starting ones when it autobuilds one?

In 1.01 i had the same problem with costructors idling indefinetly. I found out already that cycling through them, giving them a order to move and then reautomate them usually fix the issue and they happily go back costructing their stuff.

I had this happening to me when playing humans, so no special techs (it happened most of the time with the gas mining station)

Human- normal home system, starting size, basic tech level.
