Troop strength
Troop strength
I'm curious, what determines troop strength? In my current game I had troops trained at the academy that were just a bit over 20k in strength. Then I found the Fortress of Torak (+100% strength) and built some troops there and they were weaksauce (11088 base with the 100%). So what gives? Is it because the Fortress is colonized by Teekans/Zeenox vs. Mortalen? I would have expected the Fortress to turn out troops at least as good.

RE: Troop strength
Hello,
yes you are right, the strength is affected by the race of the troops you are recruiting.
In my current game, my human trooper regiments have a strength of approx 12k, whereas on my Teekan only colonies any recruited battalions have strength approx 6k.
According to the galactopedia, each race's trooper strength is affected by the Intelligence and Aggressiveness stats of the race, with highly intelligent / aggressive races fielding the best troops.
I have only played as humans so far, so I don't have a wide experience of this.
I've read elsewhere that species like the Boskara field some of the best troops.

Suckage. Never saw that, thanks. Guess I'll be hoping for colonist transports then.

RE: Troop strength
Has someone compiled a list of troop strength by race ?
I can t find it in the manual...

They gain strength by combat also (representing experience I guess). I have now some veterans Sol marines with 25k strength [:D]
RE: Troop strength
I don't think these have changed in 1.5.0.1 but this is what I found in my tests (with the standard races.txt file):
No wonder playing as Teekan's a lot in 1.0.6.0 taught me to use absolutely overwhelming force in invasions[:D].
Code: Select all

Boskara 14000
Mortalen 13300

RE: Troop strength
That was unfortunate for you, Krob, that the Fortress of Torak was located on a Teekan planet. In one of my games, the Fortress was found on a Boskara volcanic world. The troops recruited there was excellent.

On that note, is there a cap to the bonus strength due to experience? Or could a teekan unit eventually become the terror of the galaxy?
RE: Troop strength
I've noticed my troops capping at 30k, but I don't know if that applies to all races.
RE: Troop strength
Coneheads are the 6th strongest troop in the game. That just does not fit right, I picture them the weak Psilon type.[:-]

RE: Troop strength
Ahh but they don't have to fight with their bodies. They can build powerful combat mechs and such. That's why intelligence contributes to troop strength as well.ORIGINAL: ASHBERY76

I am not 100% sure, but I think the cap is independent of race. So every troop, if it survives enough battles, will be allowed to reach the same ultimate strength.
RE: Troop strength
Troops will also gain strength from being used from what I can tell.
I had one race of troops start at 14700, sent some of them to fight and they are now at 19,300. I would assume that there must be some upper limit.

RE: Troop strength
From what I've experienced, the troop strength cap is 30k, regardless of the race.
So, yes - you can have uber stormtrooper walking-rats if they survive enough battles.
I found that I usually have cloning facilities by the time I need big invasion forces, so it's really not a problem.

RE: Troop strength
The starting troop strength is exactly Aggression * Intelligence, which works out to 10k for your baseline 100/100 race.
So no need for any lists anymore
.
The cap unfortunately seems to be 30k for everyone (Hey devs, doesn´t it absolutely suck to be a boskaran vet?).
Happy new year, folks.

Happy New Year, kiddies!
Seems they changed something in RotS - I've found my human troops hitting 32500 (seems to be the cap, but I'll have to do some more invading to test it out). I'm not sure what the cap is now - it USED TO be 30k regardless of race.

Happy New Year Everyone!
Remember also that there are a few select ruins that will increase troop
strength if the planet it's on is colonized.

RE: Troop strength
OK, that was weird - I reloaded that game with the 32500 strength troopers - and now they're all 30k. Must have been a bug - 30k does indeed seem to still be the cap.
@ehsumrell1 - I don't think the ruins boost the strength cap. 30k seems to be the cap, regardless of any other bonuses.
I've found when playing wimpy races, that loading up 3 transports early on in the game, and using them to take over independent planets will work them up enough, so that when I finally get cloning facilities, I can pump out troops which can hold their own. I do 3 transports, as if I drop 15 on a planet with 1 defending troop, I can kill it off, get experience for all my troops and not take the usual "Teekan suicide squad" losses. Egads, but the little rats suck at combat. I tried invading Boskar worlds with green Teekan troops. I needed 10-1 odds to win! Ok, make that lemmings, not rats.
If you plan ahead, the troop strength reduction is quite inconsequential.

RE: Troop strength
Thanks for the feedback everybody. Personally I think that the cap shouldnt be some random number, but some factor of the troop's base strength. Maybe +150% or +200% max, which on the average is very similar to what it is right now.

Agree; especially now with cloning you only need to max. one troop to get all maxxed troops.
