Age of Rifles and Great Naval Battles coming soon on GOG

Post by Napol7 »

Just a heads up in case you have missed it.

Wargame Construction Set III - Age of Rifles along with its campaign disk will be coming soon on GoG (along with volumes 1 + 2 but I do not know if anyone cares about those).

Furthermore, a Great Naval Battles package will be released which will contain all 5 volumes of the series.

No release date yet on any of the above. It just says "coming soon", however the fact that their store pages are up means that they will be coming for certain in the near future.

Surprised no comments on this, AOR has been a wishlist item by many for years, and now it’ s due any moment , nothing!

GOG still says “soon” but Steam has it being released tommorrow….

You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

just goes to show, old games are as good and sometimes better, so matrix should try and revive the older ones

Thanks for this info for these abandonwares.
I know Age of Rifles because there was the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871).

I don’t know the Great Naval Battles series, good old games ?

I played one of them. Real-time fleet combat simulation similar to Starfleet Command and Rules of Engagement if you know either of those. Except historical instead sci-fi. Player gets to aim and shoot the guns too if so desired.

GREAT NEWS!

Rules of Engagement series and first 2 Breach games are on GOG! Rules of Engagement games are very similar to Starfleet Command series and they have this Star Trek: The Next Generation aesthetics going for them. Breach games are small tactical scale infantry action similar to Laser Squad, Jagged Alliance, the likes. Best of all, Rules of Engagement & Breach series work crossover so that ship boarding action in Rules of Engagement starts Breach game with an appropriate scenario, and result of it carries back over to Rules of Engagement game! As I understand it, compatible games in the series are Rules of Engagement & Breach 2; Rules of Engagement 2 & Breach 3 (not yet available on GOG). I gotta try these out!

To add to my earlier post, the games come WITHOUT MANUALS! Less of a problem with Rules of Engagement as all the actions are clickable buttons on the screen with keyboard shortcuts highlighted. LOTS of buttons and dials though, and I'd like to know what does what: what's the difference between CHASE and INTERCEPT? More of a problem with first Breach game as some game functions are behind keyboard without any hints on the screen, and I couldn't figure out how to proceed to next turn. Luckily manuals are somewhere in the Internet and downloadable.

Age of Rifles was my first real computer War Game. I should pick it up on Steam.

"Crusade in Europe" was my first real wargame:

It seems you can play a version online.
