RE: Basic info on War in the West 43-45

<t> Just saw that this game might be around the corner and had to read up a bit on its design...<br/> <br/> At first glance I must say I'm not shocked about the choice of a 10 mile hex. The fighting in Normandy was indeed in a very narrow position and the allies were bottled up for quite a while. Tr...

RE: Where are my routed units?

Some routed units (tank?) can I believe disband right after rallying. Maybe that's the case here...

RE: Stacking in a Hex anomally??

<t> I also feel that stacking as it is now works quite well, except maybe for support units. Maybe something like 3 combat and 1 support units of any sizes per hex. But when you consider hexes behind the front, we often already achieve densities not seen during the war. For me the only problem with ...

1st turn level bomber squadrons not available to fly airfield attacks

<t> In my current game I've noticed a problem with a number of german level bomber squadrons not being available to fly airfield attack missions.<br/> <br/> For the first turn I've lowered the percent to fly setting to 10% so a maximum of damage can be wrecked on the Soviet airforce. I then select a...

RE: Do forts build too fast (particularly for Soviets)?

<t> Just a few notes. As stated by a few others, I have no problem with level 1 and 2 fortifications appearing fast (one per turn for a reasonably good shaped division). Anything beyond that I think should require engineer capacities beyond the division's organic capacity. Simply because those highe...

RE: Amphibious Assault

<t> After Norway and the cancelation of Sealion the German Navy as far as I recall wasn't all that concerned with ampibious operations. The catastropic casualties taken during the Norway invasion precluded the use of those old tactics. For Norway (iirc) the means to bring troops to shore was by tran...

RE: thinking of purchasing

<t> I'd say go for it! I was also a bit worried about micro management when I first read about the game. In fact I've found out that many of the things I did not want to delve into in too much detail (like air missions) are decently handled by the ai. When it comes to moving your armies and fighting...

RE: Use of German air assets on turn one

I had the same problem and realised what was causing it. Your fighter bases on turn one don't have anywhere near enough ammunition for your bomber squadrons. So once you transfer the bombers and fly one mission you will probably be out of ammo on that base...

When do you know the questions are too easy? When even I know them (yes I studied history, but usually I stand no chance at these types of grunt quizes.

Yes, you have to apply the official patches first. I think you will find most on this page http://grognard.com/patch.html . If any are missing make a websearch.

RE: The point of some CVP dates?

<t> Patrice you forgot about historic "gearing limits" (setting up the production lines etc.), that is you cannot simply switch production from one plane to another without temporary loss of productivity. Essentially you'd decide to stop production of the P-39 and order the factories to start produc...

RE: WiF Master Edition

<t> I must confess the info on GDG's site on the Master edition doesn't sound all that good. I certainly can't imagine ever playing that version. Essentially too complex for too little gain (loss in some areas). Worse, I have far less trust in Rüdiger's work then Harry's. While I can't make a final ...

RE: Anti-air question

<t> Actually the 88s were pretty vulnerable in ground combat. Niklas Zetterling in his Normandy 1944 book speculates that many cases of tanks supposedly destroyed by 88's was actually by 75mm AT. What the 88s were really good at in addition to their AA role was as artillery (both direct and indirect...

RE: PLEASE have a no turn-limit option!

<t> On the Soviet Union. The only way it would ever have sided with Germany (and even then it's unlikely, a three way war would have been more probable) is if the Western Allies had attacked it in 1940 over the Winter War. The entire Berlin-Rome-Tokyo Axis was founded against the Soviet Union (the a...

RE: Top 15 Rows

<t> My only worry is Spitzbergen which apparently is withing the top 15 hexrows. But then again that island as far as I recall only served as a German weatherstation and had a garrison of less then 50 men. The allied search for said weatherstation (it was not known where they were located) was a bit...

<t> I also wouldn't see a problem with trimming the map down. The first thing I thought when I saw the first screenshots of Canada and Alaska was "beautiful, but no one will ever use that terrain, no railroads, no cities, no ports, no nothing...". And those 15 hexes (height) should make a big differ...

<t> I only played the Napoleonic BG games against others (email), all my otehr gaming experience with BG is hotseat-solo or against the ai.<br/> <br/> Anyhow, those games against another human player seemed to go more slowly, more careful marching (particularly flanking attempts trying to stay out o...
