I just tried the "patrol system" command. Fleet jumped to system edge near a mine. A pirate attacked a mine near the star and one of the patrol ships zoomed over and blasted him to space pebbles, then zoomed back to the fleet.

At several hundred ic (intergalactic credits) per toilet seat -- just like Lockheed Martin, Mattel and all the other irl contractors!

There are insufficient armament variables to make shape design particularly interesting/diverse. Fingers crossed an expansion will address this. Right now, for fighting ships it's pile on engines, reactors, blasters and shields.

Galciv has a tile system -- very watered down, but better than nothing. I hold out hope that Galciv 3 will offer more rpg elements. Their current fantasy title is incorporating dynasties, heroes with personality traits, retinues, etc. Maybe that system will be carried over to G3.

Someone upstream mentioned a desire to rescale the ships v planets. That would be a nice -- either manually or just a hardcoded shrinking. Right now, they are a pretty obnoxious cluster around planets and in battles.

Yeah, too bad the ai is sending repair ships despite fuel shortages. I like the idea of fuel as a strategic resource, but the current implementation is more of a headache than any kind of fun. Hopefully this will get sorted out in future patches.

I just discovered EFS recently, but can't get the demo to run. Considering the popularity of EU and how easily its premise could be transferred to space, I'm kind of surprised nobody's really done anything on that scale.

Yeah, the shrill klaxon and big sliding popup is distracting. I'd prefer a toned down alarm and a ticker in the corner of the screen.

Fishman, I could quibble with your points, but given the game mechanics, they're persuasive. From a gaming stance, I don't want a merchant fleet to obsolete the need for a standing navy, but a more robust diplomatic ai routine might be a solution.
