have the smaller ones already developed the hyperdrive? IIRC in my pirate game empires without a hyperdrive didn't have an influence range.

copy that. All of my private vessels get extra shields and armor at the beginning of the game. So they can even run away from monsters.

i can confirm this. Happens to me often(approximately every 3rd time) after i load a savegame. reloading the same save may work but not always.

After upgrading you can rename them in the design-screen. Just edit the designs and change the name on the right side of the screen.
