Jeeze- went to try to uninstall (so I could reinstall) and the game is not listed in the control panel under programs I can uninstall. I truly love this game, but sometimes I think its more trouble than it's worth...[:)]

Think I'll try an uninstall and re-install. I have all the discs and patches. Patches are cumulative, right? (i.e., the last patch contains all the data of previous patches...) That's correct isn't it?

If I have an otherwise effective spy that is demoralizing, I move them to the space port above my home planet when they are not in use (or while they are engaged in counter-espionage); otherwise, like Anthropoid, I dismiss them.

I found that if I move ANY governors who pop up at my homeworld off to other colonies (move them as soon as they arrive in the game), the chances for a coup are much smaller (I usually play monarchy).

Two buttons would solve this:
1) Disable tech trading for human players only.
2) Disable tech trading for human and AI players.

If I want Sol (and sometimes I do), I use the game editor to "create" Sol...
Create a continental planet third from the sun, plant a human colony on said world, switch your capital to the third planet, then custom shape the rest of the solar system.

And, figuring out the answer to my own question (duh), add troop compartments to the station...

And as turtlefang said, hab stations and assault pods help defend too.
