OT computer security

Post by geofflambert »

In the process of converting my security system from McSecurity (not the real name {there's a fee involved wink wink}) to ESET I discovered that the Base Filter Engine had been removed. This is done in order to defeat whatever firewall you are using without you knowing (or apparently McSecurity) it. ESET provided a repair program that restored it. My ESET scan turned up many trojans that McSecurity missed. If you're running a PC, click the start button then type services and click on that at the top of the list. Here's an example:

You will then get a list of services that should include Base Filtering Engine as here:

If it is missing, you need to get with your security service and get it restored.

Note this only applies to Vista and later. XP never had it.

Bump. After my computer caught something nasty my favorite computer store recommended ESET in no uncertain terms. Didn't know about the repair function.

This is a pretty far dig back (11 months) for an OT. Are you reading everything from the beginning of time forward, or the other way 'round?

If you are concerned, just download (or create yourself) a small file called eicar.com which is a harmless Anti-Malware Test file.

http://www.eicar.org/86-0-Intended-use.html

If your security software doesn't flag it, you have problems......

Cheers,
Reg.
