Ground Unit Icon Mod

Post by RocketMan »

This mod has been included as part of my Combined Unit Icon Mod. This sub mod will no longer be supported.

I made a mod to the ground unit icons that adds the name of the equipment/vehicle to the icons. These are the icons that appear when you hover your mouse over a unit.

For all you frequent long term players, this is probably not needed as you most likely have all the icons memorized already. But for infrequent or new players, this should be helpful.

For the complimentary air unit icon mod go to this thread - Air Unit Icon Mod.

A sample of what this mod looks like is shown below. The actual mod is in the next post as an attachment as the Matrix forum only allows you to attach one file to each post.

The attachment in this post is the above picture, not the modded icon files! The mod is the attachment in the next post!

The mod is attached at the bottom of this post. To use the mod, first back up all the files that start with a G (e.g. G0049.tga) in the Dat\Art\Units folder, then copy the files in the zip file to that folder. Note that you are not required to copy the WitE Ground Unit Icon Mod Preview Picture.jpg or the WitE Ground Unit Icon Mod Readme.txt files.

Thanks for the nice words guys. I was working on a similar mod for the air icons but I have come to the conclusion that instead of having an icon for each individual plane like for the ground units, they should be grouped by type (e.g. Fighter, Night Fighter, Jet Fighter, Fighter Bomber, etc.) instead of having an individual icon for each and every model of aircraft.

The reason for this is that hovering the mouse over an airbase will already show the number and type of each aircraft, so the popup at the bottom of the screen could be used to display the total numbers of each type (eliminating the need to add the numbers in your head). However, this requires a change to the aircraft data (wrac.dat) file instead of just copying and replacing the icon files.

As a WitE newb, it makes a quick glance much more informative. I really do like this mod, thanks. Looking forward to the air version.
Kind Regards,

Any plans on expanding this mod to cover the air forces also?

MJ

Edit....never mind. Didn't see your post concerning planes.

Under "User Preferences" make sure you have "Show Ground Element/Aircraft Icons" checked.

You're welcome Templer, rosseau and Empire101.

Also, I have rolled this mod up into a Combined Unit Icon Mod for those of you who are interested.
