WOTC bans a man for life based on false accusations

WOTC = Wizards of the Coast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIh3ykLBzOM

This isn't going to be good for imago of Wizards of the Coast
You know what they say, don't you? About how us MechWarriors are the modern knights, how warfare has become civilized now that we have to abide by conventions and rules of war. Don't believe it.

The game died back in 97. Hmm it's 2017. That means this game has been flogged for 20 years AFTER it had jumped the shark.
Wargame, 05% of the time.
Play with Barbies 05% of the time.
Play with Legos 10% of the time.
Build models 20% of the time
Shopping 60% of the time.
Exlains why I buy em more than I play em.

Wizards of the Coast isn't a game anymore than Slitherine and Matrix Games are. It is game publisher. [:-]

You'll notice, I never once directly referred to WotC. Because it wasn't required. When I said "the game" it was obvious what game I was referring to. Well at least to anyone that would care about the topic.

WotC was also a nuisance back in 97 as well. They couldn't print concisely worded cards then, and likely can't today.

The fans of the guy in the video should refuse to buy games from Wizards of the Coast until his ban is lifted.

Some have commented along those lines in the comments of the video. But based on what is said somewhere else, there is more to the case than what the man says in the video, and the ban may be well deserved and justified. In which case I jumped the gun [8|]

But it made me think few things. Like how such things could be made by mistake and what would it mean to us digital consumers on the receiving end of it. When Xbox One was first released, it required reliably working Internet connection to use the damn thing. Imagine that being a norm, and one mistake too many (by anyone) would lead to deleting of your account and inability to use the games & software you have paid for. Something like this happened just recently over YouTube. And in Finland authorities decided to block access to W3C site with a claim about child porn. What if this happened to YOU and as a result of it you couldn't play your war games anymore.

Ever since we've been relegated to buying "licenses" instead of the digital game; we haven't owned most all digital games since that time. We only own a license. Licenses can be revoked at the issuers valid reason at any time. Steam has a system set up like this. If they revoke your account you lose all the games you had on the Steam account because they were licenses not ownership of said games. So Steam basically owns your butt if you buy many games from their site and let's face it the majority of games are now distributed by Steam.

We've been at the mercy of distributors, publishers, and developers for years now(excluding a few like Matrixgames/Slitherine, Paradox and a handful of other wargame companies). It was the worst thing to happen to software consumers when whomever it was allowed these types to sell licenses instead of the ownership of the game like a board game.

Steam isn't that bad. Yet. Before any game can be played, it needs to be downloaded and installed. Default directory is
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common

There are all the games under their own directories. Even if Steam were to delete my account, I can still run game executables from those directories. Of course some games may have DRM which may require functional Steam account. And Steam don't have monopoly yet. We can still buy games from Matrix Store. But we still have reasons to be worried...

A good way to see what happens when Steam is not active is delete the Steam Client from your computer and see how many of the games you have still run without it. There will be some of course but, not most.
