infantry with the dreaded "R"

Post by nardiajn »

Playing a game of Guadalcanal, stock scenario
and about 20 turns in, question is.. how do the infantry units get out of
"R" status... is it just using political points, or is there a time they are no longer "R"
(I assume that means reserve)
any help is appreciated.

Can you change the HQ? If it white R you can't change the HQ.

To be more clear if the text is yellow it is clickable allowing you to access an opportunity to buy out the unit with political points.

If the text is white the unit is permanently restricted.

The player is not given complete freedom to denude all garrisons.

I am using this scenario as US as a training ground for the game mechanics.

Since none of the units is prepared for an invasion the time needed to get the PP should not be a problem.

On the other hand the leaders of nearly all airgroups cant read or write and getting some aviation support to PM and Lunga should also be a priority.

Given the values of most bases any Invasion seems to be to much of a risk anyway.

I am thinking about taking the dot bases south of guadlacanal because I suspect they help spotting my supply convoys but there are Raiders from the preplanned invasion without restriction.

Just my 5c in the hope someone can enlighten me about the dangers of the dot bases.

Reinforcements already allocated to SouthPac and SWPac will start arriving over time so be a little patient.

If you are truly antsy to get something to that theater early you can buy out some base forces.

Available Assault Value,,,ie front line troops in battalion, regiment and especially division size are thin at start.

The independent regiments, combat engineer battalions and regiments are some of the more readily available and quickly affordable units with assault value that can be acquired for shipping out early.

It takes considerable time and a commitment to saving PPs to buy out divisions.

The dot bases south of the Solomons are good spots for advanced naval search, but be aware anything you put out on that limb will be very isolated and subject to naval air and bombardment raids and counter invasion.

Best not to commit an actual base force, but use an AVP or AVD to create a seaplane base for the operation of catalinas.

The AVP or AVD will provide aviation support that allows the seaplanes to operate form even a level 0 airfield as they are not actually using the airfield.

Thanks for the advice.

Do dot bases spot TFs on their own (like coastwatchers)?

They seem to represent some military infrastructure.

No. Dot bases represent locales with the potential to allow port and airfield construction.

Coast watchers are limited to the historical areas that the Aussies had them operating in.

Thanks again, will leave those dot bases alone.

I think to remember that I landed some engineers on an enemy dot base.

The base remained an enemy base, that brought me to think that somehow these are military installations you need some rifles to take and not only shovels and picks.

It takes a unit with an assault value greater than 0 to take a base, even a dot base.

However, if you garrison a base with a unit with an assault value greater than 0 then dot bases within a 1 or 2 hexes will switch over to your control over time.

This game mechanism is know by the slang term "row boat corps" here on the forum.
