How to create new forms of Government

Post by Testmann »

Hi!

I was thinking about modding a few new Government types into the game, and for that I'd need your help. [:)]

So far I can't even find the file where the original Governments are defined.

My goal is to create one government that gives you some mining bonus and some happines penalty, and one thats very good but needs a certain technology to be initialized.

Any tips for a modding apprentice in this game?

beste grüße!

Pretty sure it's not currently possible to alter governments

I think it is odd that you can create an entire new race but not a government. Is there some technical reason new governments can' be modded in?

That's not the only weird decision regarding mods. You can create a race, but you cannot edit help files? I never understood this...

It is just a tad bit annoying that you cannot modify governments, such as Republic and Democracy. It's automatically assumed that these are both capitalist government styles but what about their social counterparts? I would like to be able to run a Socialist Republic.

Modding-wise, it pretty much allows a complete overhaul of the game universe. You can make your own tech trees, resources, components, government types, create your own galaxy map including special locations, write your own storyline including creating triggered events similar to what we have in the official storylines. -Erik Rutins (Matrix Games’ Director of Product Development)

Better put it here instead of opening a new thread:

What is the difference between normal governments and special governments, modding-wise? How do you set a government as not available to just anyone)? The DW:U modding guide wasn't any help to me.

Normal governments are usually assigned racially and appear in the in-game setup screen.
Special Governments can be named and override the racial normal government (i.e Way of Ancients or
Way of Darkness available to the race) Also can be used as a race event via editor.

To disallow a government:

In the race file find this line:

'Disallowed Governments: comma-separated list of GovernmentIds that this race cannot normally use
DisallowedGovernments ;

Work this line in each of the races' file that you don't want using a particular government.

Hope this helps if I understood you correctly!

Thanks mate, but it's either not exactly what I wanted or I misunderstood your answer. I would simply want to know how to make a new, custom government "special", so that it can only be used if the race has it set as its special government via SpecialGovernment flag.

I've done just this very recently.

In the governments.txt file you have to make your new government's availabilty 'race specific'. This will blanket disallow all races from using it unless you indicate otherwise in a specific race's .txt race file.

To then allow a specific race to use your new government, in their .txt race file at the Special Government line, put the number of your new government. This will mean that only this race can use your new government. You may also want to make this race's preferred starting government your new one as well, which is just the next line down in the race file.

I get it now. Somehow I wasn't using the original governments.txt file, so I didn't have the instructions :)

Thanks a lot for your help, Gerishnakov!
