Re: Reflections on the Beta Patch 1.07.11

Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945 is a turn-based World War II strategy game stretching across the entire Eastern Front. Gamers can engage in an epic campaign, including division-sized battles with realistic and historical terrain, weather, orders of battle, logistics and combat results.

The critically and fan-acclaimed Eastern Front mega-game Gary Grigsby’s War in the East just got bigger and better with Gary Grigsby’s War in the East: Don to the Danube! This expansion to the award-winning War in the East comes with a wide array of later war scenarios ranging from short but intense 6 turn bouts like the Battle for Kharkov (1942) to immense 37-turn engagements taking place across multiple nations like Drama on the Danube (Summer 1944 – Spring 1945).

In my opinion, if one installs it, they should play the computer a couple times, as the game is qualitatively different.

I am finding my previous tactics and strategies are not as good. Almost to the point that I am concerned the Germans now have a greater advantage. The defense on Grandpa Dnipro seems more like a stop over for the Germans. Anybody else finding this?

I don't want to sound too aggressive, but could you please post stuff in the right forum? You are spamming the AAR forum. Just post it in the general section, or the War Room, but not here.

Well you may not have wanted to come across that way, but using the term 'spamming' definitely communicates a negative sentiment. Perhaps if you do not agree that I post something having to do with a game I am playing, in "After Action Reports", you can inquire to those that monitor the postings, and ask them if my posting is inappropriate.

Last time I checked, spam shows up in the email and is unsolicited. This is a billboard/forum, unsolicited postings are expected.

Agreed. Your questions are fine but this is an AAR forum. Your comments and questions are appreciated but this is the wrong forum.

Please use this forum: tt.asp?forumid=909
or this forum: tt.asp?forumid=911
or even the main forum: tt.asp?forumid=695

I am not following AAR forum with the same detail as other (no global subscription), so if you will post something valuable concerning "my" patch, I will possibly miss it. Also, you are starting a new thread for each issue, instead of writing down the description "of your brilliant victories and unfortunate defeats" in a single thread for a single game, which is the default behaviour of people in this sub-forum.

Organizational matters aside, I do agree with your sentiment. Some bugfixes could really alter the balance of the game, like the one with support units working better (as the Germans have advantage in support units during early war, in numbers and quality, they benefit more from the fix in 1941; of course there will be "payback time", as the Soviets will be able to build hundreds of good support units later and benefit from them as well).

Have received info back from Red Lancer on the issue of where to post. A most enlightening message!

BTW, my posts are about several games I am playing, at the same time.

The American press is having a field day with this Toronto thing, actually.

It's like something from the show House of Cards. I'm expecting a video with prostitutes to turn up.

A field day about losing a hockey game? Wow! CNN must be desperate to redirect negative reports away from the Republicans and the Tea Party!

You yanks got to do what our Prime Minister does when he wishes to avoid a negative story, leave the country, deny having anything to do with it, and if all else fails, blame the office clerk!

I agree that the game can feel quite different. The game has gone through some major evolution over the past few years as we've reacted to player input and found and fixed bugs. Sometimes the changes are fully intended, and sometimes the balance changes result from the unknown/unexpected impact of a bug fix. We think the game has continued to get better, but it is different. We try to find a balance between improving the game (making it more realistic, less subject to gaminess and with less bugs) while trying to maintain a healthy game balance for both human and AI play. So what I'm really saying is we take our best shot but with all of the conflicting goals it's not easy.

That's something Fox News would do, not CNN. :)

Well, having surrendered as Soviets the first time I played them with the 1.07.11 beta patch, I would say the Germans have too much of an advantage now.

My opponents panzers were able to make the same thrusts they did the first turn. It was like they continually had 50 movement points, or seemed that way. Usually a Soviet player can avoid being pocketed after the first turn, but I had three or 4 more pockets to deal with in later turns. I surrendered on turn 8, because I had nothing to throw into the gap, and had no troops from slightly south of Smolensk, to Kiev!

On another Note, one cannot even begin to entertain anything but a "run for your lives" defense, as the soviets with this new patch. IMHO!

Check to see that he did not do some cheesy crap like fly multiple air transport missions onto HQs stacked on airbases during the first several turns.

No idea, but I know that since he was a inexperienced player, I suggested he ask Bozo for some suggestions.

Bozo!
Are you a counter revolutionary? Did you betray the people's revolution?? Comrade Zhukov wants to know!

Lastkozak, I am only slightly guilty. I informed your opponent regarding the new rules for air supply (e.g. that you need an air base to efficiently supply your tanks and that you can only use Ju-52). Will Zhukov forgive me?

Maybe your opponent concentrated all Ju-52s in one spot. If you do that you can supply some corps with 250+ Ju-52s.

In your next game you should check the combats. It will show you where he supplied his troops and with how many transports. It gives you a good indication where the next push comes. Also, maybe you can drop a para brigade next to those airfields and displace them. That would destroy lots of damaged Ju-52s. Cheese fights cheese!

Forgive you? Not a problem, we stopped summary executions, after all, a "comrade criminal" still works harder in Siberia, than a German POW's!

Comrade Zhukov, is annoyed, I suggest you not entertain sharing a shot of vodka with him!

Stalin on the other hand........?

Comrade Bozo,

I often send such links to my opponents, so they can hear for themselves, the great majesty of the Soviet people and their Republic's determination for nothing other than Victory! (psych warfare 101!)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sxTbfeYdO0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U06jlgpMtQs

I will check to see if he is being gamey, about using his Ju52's, although since there is little one can do, I prefer to not use HR's!

Further to Ju52's;

If one cannot stop them from re-supplying the panzers, what is the best approach to insure that they will get shot down by my Yaks?

If anything, my opponents will have to ensure their is escort cover.

lastkozak,

I see your link to the most uplifting Soviet national anthem. However, it is an anachronistic link, as you link to the 1977 lyrics. The 1944 version refers to "Stalin", which was purged from the modern version.

http://www.marxists.org/history/ussr/sounds/lyrics/anthem.htm

The music, without doubt, is the greatest of national anthems. Your second link is GREAT MUSIC., especially with the sound of T-34's and IS-2's driving in the distance!!!

Goosebumps everytime I hear it.

Regards
