Music

Post by bretg80 »

While staring at small icons representing military weapons of destruction is most everyone's cup of tea on this forum, I sit here and wonder, so what does war sound like in this game? Do we get a little exciting music to keep us entertained as the battle heats up and a more relaxed ensemble while we are positioning our assets for battle?

What say ye about the Sounds of music in Command?

Command being a standard desktop application, there is nothing preventing you from having your favorite music-playing application blast your ears in the background [:D]

Referring to the last AAR: 'Ride of the Valkyries' as the raid is going in. 'Thunderstruck' as the AH arrive. Some country song when the Osprey gets whacked. [;)] Its all about queuing the right music at the right time [:D]

I'd rather have no music. I doubt any TF commander has any playing on his bridge, so why would I want it.

How about playing "Satisfaction" while sending a river patrol boat up a Vietnamese river on a covert mission? Sound familiar?

Well, I believe the game should have a great sound track to go with it. And yes, we can play our itunes, pandora, CD player, or whatever media you choose to listen to, but having the game respond to action and interludes with music is very popular in many games and would be a nice addition. And no, we aren't on the bridge of an aircraft carrier, so having music should be okay. Besides if you don't like it just turn it off.

Something for a future expansion I hope.

It's almost release time.... [&o]

I have to say I'm with Sunburn on this. Having been fortunate enough to a beta tester I feel that Command is different, it's not just another game, I think it has a great future as a serious planning/educational tool. It doesn't need bells and whistles like sound, a fancy interface and a cut scene movie at the beginning. I'm not denigrating those things, they're great in the right contexts and I understand some people's desire to have music. But I can't think of many games with music that I haven't switched off permanently after a while. You have to have huge numbers of sound files to get enough variety and IMHO you really are better off with a streaming service or your own CD collection, especially as people's views on what is a "good" soundtrack will differ so much.

Being an ex Fire Control Tech i know for a fact we didn't have music goin at the radar console while we had hostiles inbound..lol. My excitement is high in prep for Command. I served aboard several ships in the middle east duing the 70-80 and am looking forward to working up a few scenarios of events i lived through. In game music should not be needed to enjoy a good battle![:-]

I'm glad there's no music, if only because implementing it would probably have delayed the game a few more days.

At Ease, that's interesting. As you've been there for real, could I ask a question, something I always wondered about (don't trust the movie versions)-what can you actually hear in that situation? E.g.is it quiet with the occasional command being issued or a really noisy with alarm tones going off and a lot of dialogue going on? I have wondered whether "control room background sounds" would make a good sound track for Command. If anyone has played "Fleet Command" the soundtrack on the menu screen at the beginning has something like that, but the sample is so short if you play it continuously it quickly gets irritating.

IMHO music is good for a game but less appropriate for a sim. Command straddles the two genres and I don't miss game-organic music in the slightest. A little Hunt For Red October soundtrack running in the background is about as far as I'll go along with Pandora.

I loved listening to German period music when playing Silent Hunter III. And sipping on schnapps.

I recommend you queue up an appropriate period channel on your Pandora.

Since this is a simulation striving for realism, if playing as the Americans:
-In a 1990s scenario, "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood should be put on repeat.
-In a post-2001 scenario, "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue" by Toby Keith should be put on repeat.

During an actual engagement there is very little sound in the CIC. You have crosstalk between the different consoles and the weapon officer in regards to contact status and priorities. On my destroyer the MK 92 Missle/Gun control console was situated beside the Electronic Emmisions console. This allowed me to paint a target via pulse(tracking) radar/get iff if available from pulse return/from emmisions of target know pretty well what type of target being tracked by frequency of emmisions. Mostly it is quiet as it is not as easy as folks think to keep track of multiple targets statuses.
