Hi/Lo Naval Attacks

Post by 1EyedJacks »

Hi all,

Has anyone tried running DB on skip-bomb naval attacks while also sending DB on higher altitude attacks in an attempt to split any CAP? I'm just curious to know if its possible to split/avoid/reduce any assigned CAP on naval attack missions by running Hi/Lo altitude naval attacks with DB.

This should work but be prepared for the attack that runs into the cap to get mauled. I will generally do 2-4 different attacks at different altitutes. A 4000, 5000 and 9000, 10000 combo is one I often do with escorts for each strike. This helps maximise coordination.

You should read this post if you havent tm.asp?m=2382494.

I suspect that the LowN chance of a hit is severely reduced compared to level bombers because the DBs only carry one bomb,
but tbh I never tried it and probably never will because it would require to train dedicated DB pilots on LowN.

That said I thought about the High/low attack scheme myself, RL example would be Midway where such attacks inadvertedly
split the Japanese CAP.
From what I have read though this was accomplished as well due the lack of IJN fighter control and the different inbound legs of the strikes,
so whether the altitude separation played an additional role is probably down to speculation.

Still, IMO the best way to ensure a successful CV strike is to overwhelm. And that means maximising chances of arrival on target
at the same time and that means same altitude for all attack squads.

I thought that splitting attacks into different altitudes resulted in poor coordination. To ensure that all attacks arrive together and escorted shoudn't they all be at the same level?

It does result in poor overall coordination.

choros22 meant that he separates strikes by altitude and assigns escorts for all different alts.
This way he increases chances of separate attacks by the different bombers squads, but each
attack has its own coordinated fighter protection.

Okay, thanks for the clarification.
