Fast transport pick up problem, bug or not a bug ?

Post by Swenslim »

I have a unit on Tassafaronga. Tassafaronga is controlled by allied side. I ordered a 3 DD to run fast transport mission and pick up unit and then to retreat to Munda (home base for that TF). But something strange hapend

Pre-Invasion action off Tassafaronga

80 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Japanese Ships
DD Kuroshio
DD Naganami

Japanese ground losses:
189 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 15 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 9 (0 destroyed, 9 disabled)

DD Kuroshio firing at 249th Field Artillery Battalion
DD Naganami firing at 249th Field Artillery Battalion
DD Kuroshio firing at enemy troops
Defensive Guns fire at approaching troops in landing craft at 5,000 yards
Defensive Guns fire at approaching troops in landing craft at 1,000 yards

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amphibious Assault at Tassafaronga

TF 209 troops unloading over beach at Tassafaronga, 113,137

Japanese ground losses:
10 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 4 (1 destroyed, 3 disabled)

7.7mm T99 AAMG accidentally lost during unload of 26th Ind.Mixed Bde /3

I have two questions. Is it possible to pick up unit, when you dont control the base.

And why my destoyers made Amphibious Assault with picked up parts of unit ?

I don't think Allied DD can pick up troops. Only APD. You can issue them the orders, they just wont do it. Very stubborn. Perhaps if you offer them a pivo, they might respond.

If you create a fast TF, make sure that you can specify a LCU to pick through the 'Load troops' option.
Ships can be assigned to a Fast TF, but that does not mean they can actually fulfill the mission - the DDs were probably counted as escorts.

To save time, do you have a save?

I am running into the same problem, I believe - except that the unit I am trying to pick up is at one of my own bases. The Fast Transport TF (made up of vessels with enough troop capacity for the job - for operational security I don't wish to say anymore) is given the orders to the port to pick up a specific unit.

Here is what I see happening:

one turn - the FT TF is x distance from the port, with orders to pick up unit y.

next turn - the FT TF is in port with the unit loaded and is loading supplies.

turn after that - the FT TF is headed back to home port completely empty, having dropped the unit and supplies back at the port from which I was trying to extricate them.

This has happened twice now in the last couple of weeks.

Svenslim - I think that what you see was not your TF turning into an Amphib TF (though you can look at its status the next day and tell us for sure), but just a landing in the enemy's hex by the troops as they mistakenly unload.

If your game is against the AI, it would be better for you to give your save game to michaelm, though I am sure that my opponent will be happy to provide michael with his password should he require ours. I could send the saves from the turn before, the turn in port and the turn after - at least from the last time it happened.

No, i playing pbem game. We had to re-make turn and everything went good, Fast TF picked part of the unit at night and was at home port before morning airstrikes.

I think I know why such problem appear. When you create Fat transport TF for pick up a unit, you must at first set destination not base where unit is situated but home port of this TF. Then  press Load troops button, then press Pick up a unit button, then a base and a unit.

Thanks, Sven, I'll try that. It's completely counter to what we did in WITP and UV, but that sequence almost makes sense...   oh boy, I've been playing this game far too long if that's the case... [8|]
