fatal error 772 with patches installed...

I am getting the old fatal error 772 after installing witp and installing both the 1.8 and 1.801 patches. I am currently using windows ME and if I remember correctly the patches used to fix this error in the past. Can anyone tell me what to do to get this game running?

Anyone have any ideas about how to get this game working? I am getting the same error under windows xp and ME. I have played this game on this PC many times with the 1.2 and 1.4 patches so it seems that they have reintroduced the problem in the current 1.8 patches.
I have the latest sound drivers and directx 9.0 installed on this computer.

772 is a "serial number string missing from the registry" error.

So this probably means missing registry data on this boot partition. Indication would be to reinstall from original install file on this partition to correctly populate the registry settings, at least for XP. I'm not sure about ME, not even sure if WITP runs on ME, if anyone else has it running on ME jump in a say so! But for XP. Run fresh install to populate registry settings, then you should remove the 772 error.
