caution to anyone interested in this game

Post by leftydad »

I read all the bug reports and complaints, but I bought the game because I trusted Matrix Games. Maybe that was a big mistake. On Windows XP, it won’t even load. It won’t even start. So, those of you who have a CDT, you’re lucky. The game just locks up my computer from the git-go, and I am forced to reboot.

There apparently is a work-around: use configsys and play without sound.

The developer hasn’t released a patch in 6 months.

Don’t be too gullible like I was. Spend you money on a game that works. Not one that won’t even start. Matrix Games, I expected more from you on this.

James, while I've been harshly critical of this particular game, I am also an ardent supporter of Matrix. Having worked with some of these guys, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. The issues with RFTS ARE being worked on, so don't let the current problems sour your opinion on the company in general. Matrix is the MOST user-supportive company in the gaming world, and I don't say this lightly. I have met David Heath and some of his staff, and they are genuinely nice people.

Make sure to run the very latest sound drivers for your graphic card. Did you install any 3rd party audio codecs in the past that overwrite standard Windows codecs. Especially any AC3 based stuff? Did you intstall any of these "all in wonder" codecs packs, for example Ace Mega Pack or Nimo's Codec pack.

Sound problems can be often tracked down to obsolete drivers and/or codec issues.

I have the game and it runs fine. Check your drivers as mentioned above. Not doing so will insure many games won't run in the future.

I have had no problems running this on XP. I am sorry to hear that people are running into issues.

In regards to sound card drivers, I will second this advice. For the longest time I had been having an issue with Brothers in Arms crashing on me, with the screen getting funky colors then going black and the system freezing. I had hit it on some other games as well. I thought it had something to do with my nvidia video card drivers, since going back from 78.01 to 77.03 solved the problem for Battlefield 2. Yesterday I was giving it another go at fixing the problem for BiA, and noticed that the drivers for my Audigy 2 ZS were old. Updating those solved the problem, and got me better sound to boot. :-) I imagine if I had toyed with the audio settings in BiA I would have figured out sooner, but the killing of the display had me concentrating on that.

Good luck to everyone have problems with this game.
