Tutorial Questions

Post by Adam Parker »

In Tutorial 1 can I check if a couple of things are working right:

P127 the AO hex span doesn't seem to change for the 21st Tank Corps HQ in hex 21,9 when the various AO flags are clicked like the narration suggests. I can see the two Soviet objectives in the 2nd AO.

P127 the 7th Tank Brigade in hex 16,12 doesn't seem to want to move anywhere as instructed! It's just showing the red keyline icon.

Kudos on the many tutes - seems a great way to start with the game.

In Tutorial 2 - Blowing Bridges page 129, we're told to move the German I/43 Flak in hex 9,15.

This unit can't move as it appears to be in a red restricted area of the map.

When placing the mouse over the square reinforcement button in the top right of the map, the arrow icon flickers with the green binoculars icon.

When placed over the victory button just below, the arrow flickers but this time with the clashing blue and red arrows icon.

Weird.

Yep, there are numerous inaccuracies within the tutorial. It's not you ;) I just looked for examples of the information elsewhere, but perhaps they could fix these. May be confusing initially.

oh, just noticed something. The problems with the tutorial seem to have come about after applying the 1.11 patch. Tutorial works fine under original install, and 1.10 patch.

We will fix these up for the next patch. Please feel free to ask about any questions you might have.

Promises, promises...

Well I just bought the game to check if it was worth buying ATD2, and installed the new 1.2 patch, and the tutorial is still screwed up: the first 3 important things that the player is told to do do not work (the AO does not change, and units told to move cannot move). This is very confusing to new players (and I am not really one since I own Battles in Italy). Three major mistakes in the first 2 tutorials are a bit much.I understand that these were introduced with an earlier patch, but it is even more confusing because I have no idea WHY the units cannot move (well the bridge-blowing one is in a red area, which I presume it is outside its area of operations - what the heck is it doing there anyway?).To make things worse, NONE of the German units can get to the bridge, so that whole tutorial section is useless. And since the 6th Army HQ is off-map, it is not possible to check out the area of operations as indicated in tutorial 1. [:@] And changing from Soviets to Germans between tutorial 1 and tutorial 2 is not a great idea either.

And BTW, when the player in tutorial 1 is told to press the button in the bottom right of the display(which after 10 minutes I figured out that it was the center LEFT)to change the AO display (which doesn't change), I felt like throwing the tutorial I had just printed out the window - but the windows don't open here. It should say what the button looks like (checkered button unless I located the wrong one).

If you want new players to play your games, you had better clean up your tutorials...[:-]

[&:]

But if I just spent $45 and 3 hours downloading the game and patch and printing out the tutorial, it is because I have confidence that it is worth it... [&o]

A temporary solution is not to install the patch until the tutorial has been finished...[8D]

Of course this obviates learning about the new features of the patches.[:(]

So at home I am waiting to install the patch until I finish the tutorial.

This is what I did as well, though I have to admit, Tutorials that dont work do tend to frustrate me.

Just for the record, in the Tutorial Lesson 2, with no patches installed, it doesn't seem like the HEDGEHOG examples work (the 3 three specified units have ENTRENCHED symbols but no HEDGEHOG symbols to the right) and the AIR INTERDICTION doesn't work as described in that you cannot target the hex specified in the Tutorial.

Not so great....

If the patch is not installed, the new features introduced in the patch will not be present in the tutorial (I am not sure if this is true for hedgehog), so you have a choice between old features not working or new features not working in the tutorial.

A future patch will fix the tutorials. Patch 1.2 DOES NOT fix this issue

Play the tutorials unpatched and then patch the game and play.

Hi,

I went right through the tutorial a couple of years ago when DOTD came out and apart from a few minor issues all worked fine, as I recall. I need to do this again now, as I'd shelved DOTD and I want to see if it's worth the investment to get ATD, as well as refreshing my memory. I have not patched and so far so good. [:)]

Hmmmmm, a game that cost $90, with a tutorial that does not work properly. Is there something wrong with this picture or am I missing something.

No I"m not complaining about the price, I just think a tutorial should work as advertised.

I need to relearn the game, and I need to uninstall in order to learn it. That's all I'm saying...

I'm just annoyed today, so don't bug me...[:'(]

[font="Times New Roman"]For what it's worth (probably not much) I recently replayed the tutorials in the fully patched version. As others have noted, in the first 2 or three tutorials there are some bugs, but none that I noticed in subsequent tutorials.

As I recall, the AOs are incorrect in tutorial 1 and you can't move one of the units that you are supposed to use to practice movement. The unit that is supposed to be used to demonstrate bridge blowing can't move into position and blow the bridge, nor can any other unit. Perhaps there are a couple of other problems that I don't recall at the moment. These bugs were somewhat annoying to me, but there were only a few problems and they didn't prevent me from understanding what was being demonstrated and greatly benefiting from the tutorials.

I agree that the tutorials should be fixed in the next patch, but I didn't find the bugs to be more than a minor inconvenience. I'd reccommend just playing through them in the patched, slightly buggy, state and then getting on to playing the game. At least, that's what worked for me.
