Japanese Air Production Questions....GP
Hi all. This will be my 3rd try at the evil empire. I've looked up most questions but I don't have any time to spare looking up and weeding thru the 1000's of posts for each topic. So I'm a little lazy for the rest. Here are the questions...
1. Is it the last day or the first day of the month that you have to check air production and switch from R&D to production?
2. How do you figure engines? Do you count the number of airframes and build up the engine factories to match?
3. What and how do you handle engine bonus?
4. How do you scrape airframes or is it automatic?
Any help would be appreciated....GP

1. Is it the last day or the first day of the month that you have to check air production and switch from R&D to production?
Anytime. However, once it gets within one month of production, the number will turn blue and you should have one day when production starts to switch back to R & D. So, once you know when it should come online you can either switch it immediately if the month will be done sooner than your research or you will anxiously wait until it gets close so you can switch all, some, or no factories to the next model that you want researched. For example, if you have ten factories researching an airframe and when the research for that last month is 98% complete, you can shift the factories to the next model so you won't waste anything nor allow your R & D factories that you do not want to produce the next model to become production factories.
2. How do you figure engines? Do you count the number of airframes and build up the engine factories to match?
Not necessarily since some airframes use two engines. Plus it is good to have surplus engines.
3. What and how do you handle engine bonus?
The engine bonus starts at 501 engines, it will use 1 engine per R & D factory that produces at least one research point. So seeing the answer for #2, you can see why an engine surplus is a good thing.
4. How do you scrape airframes or is it automatic?
Scrapping is automatic. To scrap is automatic, but you can scrape them if you want to.
Any help would be appreciated....GP

Re: Japanese Air Production Questions....GP
i really screwed this up on my first game. I had a lot of factories switch on the last day of the month so i too many A6M2 Rufe and Ki-44a factories.
what i do now is make sure i turn production off on all r&d factories. That way if a factory is fully repaired on a turn when i don't expect it, even though it has moved from the r&d screen to the production screen i can still change it to another r&d model and it will switch back to the r&d screen.

Do the engines need to be of the same type? I'm thinking yes for this question...
4. How do you scrape airframes or is it automatic?
Scrapping is automatic. To scrap is automatic, but you can scrape them if you want to.
So scrapping takes place at the end of an Airframes life after the next model is in production?

Re: Japanese Air Production Questions....GP
1) Yes you can but do so before the research is complete but if you are researching the next model in line, then do so after the research factory is fully repaired and when it is switched to the next model, it will still be fully repaired. Hence, a lot of research factories into the A6M2 Rufe will then switch to the A6M5 and be fully repaired. You can leave one factory to build the Rufe. But note that the A6M2 normally upgrades to the A6M2 fighter-bomber and not the A6M3. But check each scenario since each one can be different.btd64 wrote: ↑Sat May 13, 2023 1:43 am More for you RJ....GP

2) Another thing here, depending upon PDU ON or PDU OFF, your research and your engine demands will change. With PDU OFF, you will essentially have to build each model. With PDU ON, you can have a narrower focus. In this case, since the Ki-100 uses an early war model engine during the late part of the war when there is less demand for that engine, it is a decent aircraft for a CAP fighter with cannons along with a low service rating. But getting to the Ki-100 means a lot of research into the earlier Ki-61 variants but you don't have to finish the research on each model before proceeding to the next model. The same idea for the earlier Judys and Jills to get to the better Judys and the Jills with a better service rating. The Judy 1,2, and 3 models can finish researching in the same month and then you can skip the first two models and get to the one with the better and more common engine with the 500 kg bomb.
3) Yes, the bonus applies to the engine type for that air frame. This is one reason with PDU ON that I hesitate to build a lot of engines that are only used in one airframe such as the Ki-61 series, the first two Judys . . .
4) Scrapping is done automatically but only when there are more in stockpiles than are needed for the units including a certain level needed for replacements.
===============================================================================================================================
Check your engines stockpiles. You may have engines for the Mary but no production so you can build a level 10 production factory to use up the engines, then the factory can either upgrade or be switched to another model. At least you will then have the aircraft at half price since the engines are already built. Idas are also good and cheap 1E bombers for both training and bombing Chinese units in the open. Don't worry about saving those old engines to make kamikazes, there are better aircraft for those units.
The same for the Ki-27 Nate. You will need them for your training units plus the units that come in anyway. You can't build any Tojos for awhile and you need your Oscars for replacements. Building more Oscars is an option but you don't want an excess of early model types in storage, those are a waste. You will need the engines for the A6M series and other aircraft plus you also need to get to the magic 501+ engine stockpile for your research bonus.
To save some HI for your building programs, save your 81+ pilots in Tracom. Also use those as "Trainers" in your training units since they bring the overall group average up which helps the pilots gain experience and skills faster. Your 81+ bomber pilots need to go right to your training units, they are experienced in that type of aircraft and will lose experience if they shift to a different type. Use the fighter pilots in Tracom. Later, you can pull some out for both night fighters as well as some "elite" day combat fighter units in attempts to maul enemy fighter units, especially those sweeping your bases since your pilots are much more likely to be saved.
Don't be afraid to build up your HI, engine factories, and your aircraft production factories in Manchuria. Until the Soviets come in or you lose China, they are much less likely to be bombed. Also if those are bombed, you don't lose VPs for that. You also don't have to bring in oil nor resources to supply the HI and any LI that you increase. If you do build up the HI, then do so only 10 points at a time but at multiple bases. The only LI that I would increase is in Fusan since that will also draw resources there which can then be loaded on small xAKLs for shipment to the Home Islands. Also at Fusan, prime the pump with some oil and then have tankers in CS convoys hail that oil to Japan. There may not be much that arrives there but any bit that reaches there uses less fuel to get to Japan than from elsewhere.
Also, the optimum size for your research factories is 30. Do your increases at the Industry screen and not the Base screen.
Build lots of Jakes. They can train for IJN pilots for everything except torpedoes. They also work good at Low Naval with 4 bombs! Take one of the two FP units off your cruisers and maximize it on a CS. Set the other one to max size on the cruiser.
Convert excess cargo ships to AVs, they can handle a 1/3 maximized Jake unit at a small base without the need of any ground AV there. That saves any stacking of ground units for the engineers to build the forts which should be started as soon as is possible.
Build lots of AGs and ADs since they can also handle repairs and you have lots of xAKLs since you don't have to supply the Home Islands with food. Combine an AG and an AV at a base along with a 1/3 maximized Jake units, possibly an ACM tending a minefield, with an ASW on coastal only, and have a few of those along the route where your ships from the DEI hauling resources to the Home Islands so enemy submarines could have a difficult time of things. Maybe even 2 AVs with one float plane unit on night search.
Seek peace but keep your gun handy.
