15 Years

Post by sfbaytf »

Its been 15 years. Played a full campaign PBEM in WitP and soon after finishing the Witp Campaign AE came out and played a full campaign PBEM. Both time played allieds and got to 1945. In second game took Okinawa and tried to invade Japan, but screwed it up and we decided to call it a game. Was pumping out 1-3 turns a day on weekdays and 3-5 on weekends.

After second game, never looked at this for 15 years. Needed a break.

Now I got back into this. Installed latest update, spent a day figuring out how to install and configure Tracker 1.1, combat reporter and Chemkids maps.

Started a full standard campaign against the AI as the allieds. Don't know much about the other more challenging full campaign AI games are. There are certainly more choices that what was present back in 2009.

I also did a second install to start to learn how to play Japan. While I'm familar with playing the allieds in the full campaign-although things have probably changed in the past 15 years, when it comes to a PBEM opponent,

I know nothing about playing Japan.

From initial impressions looks like some new features have been added I don't recall from 2009. I also don't if the same general do's and don't that applied in 2009 in a PBEM game still apply of if changes have modified things...

Fortunately there's youtube. I don't recall ever using it back in 2009. Probably nothing on this existed.

Watched all of the Strategy Gaming dojo tutorials as well as the Jochen Heiden tutorials. I've got a lot to learn about playing Japan, but the videos help and watching the playt hroughs and strategy briefings on Japan play throughs is a great help that didn't exist back in 2009.

Been playing other games PBEM and hoping to con one of my regular opponents into giving this a try.

Lots of stuff changed since 2009. I and many others currently beleive v26b to be the best version to play. Apart from you tube there's lots of stuff on the forum to guide you through problems and there will be many.

Enjoy.

Welcome back.

This AAR has some good although dated discussion about playing Japan:

This is the AAR that got me interested in the game. It also has lots of situations that helped to bring some issues to the forefront so they could be dealt with. It also has some unique base name spellings . . .

I restarted the Allied campaign vs the AI. Reading the notes I saw I had too many old script files so I cut it down to the most recent 2019 and later scripts and restarted. As the Allied player the initial Japanese strikes on Manila seemed kinda weak and left too many ships and subs intact. I sorta recalled the strikes being more aggressive and decisive when first released.

I took a trip to the storage facility and dug up my old copy I bought when this first came. CDROM and full manual. I'll do an install later and see how first strikes go.

From watching videos it sounds like if Japan has a bad 42 the game is pretty much over.

The play throughs of non historical first turn and allowing a player to do custom first turn magical moves are interesting.

I'll have to endure a full playthrough vs the AI as Japan to just get a feel of how to play as Japan There is so much to do that you don't have to worry about as the allied. I don't know how it will be. Like other games – Warplan Pacific it sounds like the AI will trouble playing Japan. Don't know how Strategic Command Pacific is when playing Japan vs Allied AI. Nothing beats playing another human.

Don't be surprised if you have trouble installing the game from your original CD-ROM. The shelf life of a CD is supposed to be about 15 years. I don't know why they would degrade when kept cool and in the original case, but I suspect all plastics give off small amounts of chemical and that would degrade them over time.

But no worries - your CD will have your registration number for the game on it so you can use that to download directly from the Matrix site, once you have registered the game.
