4K and other Resolution Issues.
RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
I am playing TOAW IV on an LG 32" 4k screen at 3840x2160 resolution and the game looks great, and I have not experienced any graphical issues. I did use the in-game option to adjust fonts size to my liking, which was easy enough.

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
I´ve noticed that in resolution 1366x768 the orders panel is slightly cut by the down info panel. For those with the inconvenience I recomend using and app called bordeless gaming, the game will run in windowed full screen and the user gains vertical space fitting better the panels

have you tried this, try it and if it doesn't make it any better, revert back to normal
How to disable Desktop Compositions
To disable this feature: on windows 7, (8 and 10) isn't or shouldn't be a issue,...
https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/ht071432
Click on Start > Control Panel > System and Security > System.
Click on the "Advanced system settings"
In the System Properties window, go to the Advanced tab and click on the Settings button (Performance section)
Uncheck "Enable desktop composition"

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
The patch is going to hide the air warfare panel and move the button panel up if your resolution is 768 high or below. You will also be able to set the scale of the graphics items down slightly. Both of those should help.ORIGINAL: Gudadantza

There are two possible fixes.
Fix #1, Full screen mode with resolution change. This will increase the size of the entire screen, but it may make things a bit fuzzier.
Edit your Documents/My Games/The Operational Art of War IV/Opart 4 file and add the following three lines to the end. 1024 and 768 are just examples, you can put in anything that your monitor supports. You can find those by right-clicking on the desktop and going to Display Settings. There should be a drop down list of supported values.
ChangeScreenResolution=Y
ScreenY=768
ScreenX=1024
I got a 3840 2160 Laptop windows 10 and the menues did simply not work, esp the scenario editor.
I had to use a real looking glass and put my nose int the screen to read the force editor.
The font was too small for me (and I do build 1250 scale shipmodels as another hobby [:)])
But What i now present might well be what people here already linked to or expected everyone to know.
(I thouht I had read the other posts in this tread but must have missed it)
1. set up the ini fil as per Ralph post.
2.
select the game icon on desktop, rightclick and choose properties.
3.
Go to the compatibility tab
Check the box "Override high DPI scaling behaviour.
and "select Scaling performed by:"
System(enhanced)
Now the edit force window scales properly for me.
Cheers

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
It would be great if all these issues can be arranged to be handled automatically "under the hood" the first time someone boots the game before this gets put on Steam. A LOT of people use larger monitors. The last thing you want a new Steam customer to do once they buy something is to have to go to a lengthy forum thread debating various work-around fixes. This may have worked in 1996 when there were not a lot of other options. But a ton of games are out there that don't require customers to fix the product after they buy it. The old Grognards will manage, but our numbers are dwindling and you don't attract the younger set this way.

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
FYI, this was posted before the release of the first beta patch, which helped a lot in this regard:
tm.asp?m=4385645
- Added a Graphics entry under the [Scaling] section fo the Opart 4 Fonts.ini file
This upscales many of the graphics. Values greater than one make things bigger, values less than one make things smaller. This should be used with larger or smaller fonts.

I edited some fonts and using the "[Scaling] Graphics=1.30" in the Opart 4 Fonts.ini file, and works great... in game. Just tried in the editor and the "edit forces" screen doesn't change with the scaling option.
Edit: let me check which is the font that the edit forces screen is using.
RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
Well, not looking good in the editor. If I use bigger fonts the bigger words are escaping the windows. At least in my case.
I understand a new editor is in the works and the current one is (really) old code so... maybe the only option for the editor for 4k screen users is using a custom resolution for now.
If I'm wrong, I'm all ears.
The good thing is that things are working great in game with the scaling option.

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
It also depends what your monitors physical size is. The editor's perfectly fine on my 32" 4k with no special settings in TOAW and 125% scaling for the monitor as a whole in Windows.
Rewriting the old UI to do scaling is still very much a work in progress (the betas have improved some vs the initial release); but the main game window is a higher priority for the rework than the editor.

The thing that does not work for me was to only use the initial instructions in this thread,
my screen never got "downsized" even if I changed the screen resolution for the computer.
But this "override high DPI scaling behavious" was the thing that made it work.
The strange thing is that if I use the option "system enhanced" it causes a lot of debug messages on screen
like:
debug
i99511g
Bitmap dx 1556 > 900
and keeps going that way
while compatibility "system" works fine.
so this is the setting that does not work for the game but opens the force editor OK
while selecting "System" in the dropdown it seems to work.

I just thought I found a workaround,
I'm not complaining

hope I did nt confuse too many readers,
i such case just disregard this post.

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
I've reported the "System (Enhanced)" thing through the Support system, not heard anything back.
It would be nice if it worked, as the regular "System" scaling is very blurry, and Enhanced is a major improvement in terms of blurriness.
For me after the patch which allowed a bit of icon scaling I don't really have much problems with the default scaling any more, and it keeps things crisp and unit icons looking great.
But for 4K users, things will probably be different.

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
I tried some things recommended here, but it doesn't work for me. I'm running Windows 10 on a Macbook Pro with retina display. The game runs fine but the menus and hud elements are tiny. Impossible to read...
The scaling options only seems to affect the icons themselves. Fonts remain extremely small.
What should I do?

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
Phil - I assume you are running a DPI scaling setting in Windows?
If so the system will try to scale fonts so they match the setting. However in the game the dialogs are of a fixed size so it doesn't really work.
Best way is probably to go through the font sizes in the Fonts Editor, pg. 2 in the Player Options. There's a lot to go go through, and a chore, but just try to increase size by say 2 all over.

Thanks for the help. I'll try that, as soon as I get the chance. Little busy now...

RE: 4K and other Resolution Issues.
I am very disappointed by the small fonts and DPI scaling issues. I can see why this wasn't offered on Steam. Is there any patch fix to these issues yet? Even we grogs want something that actually works out of the box on a large monitor on Windows 10.

On my 27" screen pc I can at least play it. On my macbook with retina display, it's impossible. And I'm not going to invest hours fiddling around with font sizes and stuff like that. I also have the same Problem with War in the West and Decisive Campaigns.
It's funny, I installed some old John Tiller Games on my mac and they scale perfectly fine...

Four settings would allow you to make everything bigger, except for one thing:ORIGINAL: philsublime

-in the Opart 4 Fonts.ini:
[Scaling]
Graphics=1
All the interface boxes would respond to this setting, try values over 1
-Of course the fonts, though is a pain in the a$$ to discover which value to change in the different fonts
-the "Y-zoom" levels, with the Y key or the button on the panel. Makes everything in the map bigger.
-Opart 4.ini file: HugeIcons=Y this would make the unit counter in the unit panel to appear in the huge size although you could not make it any bigger, even applying the scaling factor, and this is the exception that I mentioned earlier.

I have the same Mac problem but it does the same thing to Remote Desktop
