A mini in progress report. I am in turn 70. I created a planet using the DasTactic Shadow Empire Tips and Tricks 01 Game setup for First Time Players Youtube. Small Siwa Class planet. Detailed planet generation per the video. Partial FOW. City State state. 1 Army. All story modules. Tech level 4. Normal speed. only Supreme Command Council. Beginner. Epochs enabled.

See the map for reference.

I had a fortunate setup. My initial city, Hexacon, was in a generally rainy area with plentiful resources with docile minor powers to east and to west and a relatively unpopulated unclaimed area to the north. The other three majors in the game were both some distance from me initially.

First order of business was to conquer the neighboring minors. I went east first (1, Klaestron) and then west 2, Genestone) and had no trouble overwhelming those two minors. I then consolidated while expanding northward (3) against light unorganized resistance.

After consolidation, I struck east again (4) toward Hogan, and for the first time encountered more than token resistance, especially since they were able to create a solid front south of Hogan between the two bodies of water. In the end I overpowered them and added Hogan.

At this time I decided to create a new zone north of Hexacon where I had been expanding, so that is how Baroth came into being. I mainly did it just for the experience of doing it. I'm not sure it was needed. Administrative strain in Hexacon was 12, and the new zone did not lower the strain.

From there I went northward (5) toward some attractive resources and perks and directly encountered Naxhausen, which immediately attacked me, setting off my firt and so far only war against a major power. I had thought it would be Primafel, which has wanted tribute, but they stood by and it was Naxhausen, which had remained cold but done nothing to provoke me, that started a war.

During this time I had been engaging in lots of diplomacy with Lozericca. I see them as a threat but potential ally because they are so strong. Our relations have been great, but I keep getting a message when I try to create a non-aggression pact that the faction in power isn't interested. I'm not sure what to play to overcome that. So I have watched them but tried to do nothing to provoke them. I have paid Primafel small sums every so often, and increased my friendship with them. If paying them some keeps them off my back, then so be it. Is that a bad idea? Once again, I'm not sure. (Note -- It is fun not to be sure in this game, for things to be somewhat unpredictable.)

It was also at this time that I encountered a minor regime of big ugly arachnids, as noted on the map. We backed off from each other, and I've left them alone, and they've left me alone. Is that going to come back to bite me in the rear? I don't know.

So the war with Naxhausen started north of Hogan. I was torn between trying to make peace, trying to engage in a limited war, and going for broke. Since it was the first game where I had gotten past the start, I decided to go for broke, just to see what would happen.

As shown, I initiated a two-pronged offensive into Naxhausen, with the stronger thrust with my armor (a few independent units) on the left. I took Castello and just last turn took Flint. I was helped by the armies of Lozericca, which was also at war with Naxhausen. I flanked the main force from Naxhausen with my armor by creating an opening in the center and then wheeling left, and pinned it against the Lozericcan border and annihilated it. It was easy to take Flint after that. In fact it was a race against the Lozericcan forces to see who would capture Flint. Naxhausen tried to send new forces, but as you can see on the map, they arrived too late.

Meanwhile Primafel started its own offensive against Naxhausen, causing the Naxhausen forces on my right to retreat or vanish or something in the last turn. They are just no longer there.

So that is the situation at turn 70.

A couple of comments.

Logistics. I had no real problems with logistics until my offensive northward. Then I had to contend with what others have described in the road network of a major AI power. As my road network connected with their, I had to start creating a lot of roadblocks to funnel logistics where I wanted them to go. At one point I had serious concerns about supplying my offensive, but I solved it and was able to keep pushing forward. In the end though I had to do major management during just two turns, not every turn as some have suggested.

Units. In my first fights with Naxhausen, I realized their infantry was higher quality than mine. I went to work upgrading my infantry, and that helped. I also fielded more armor than Naxhausen. That made a big difference.

As for units, I have 3 MG Infantry Brigades and 2 RPG Infantry Corps and 1 Siege Infantry Brigade. Why? To be honest, I was just trying different things to see how they worked. I have some independent artillery, mobile, mechanized, and recon units. I also field 3 light tank regiments, 2 medium tank battalions, and 1 light tank division. I have not assigned them to major formations. Is that the most efficient way to do it? Probably not. But it has worked so far. I'm used to attaching units to bigger formations in other games, but I just haven't seen the real need here. I've upgraded just about everything I use at least once.

Resources and Food. I've had no problem at all. In fact I've made a lot of money selling metals and rare metals. I had plentiful resources from the start.

Politics, profile, the economy, all that stuff. I've just muddled through that. The worst time was right after I captured Hogan. My popularity was slipping. Everyone was mad at me. I was losing a lot of money and asked for some advice on the board. I followed the advice -- basically I had raised salaries too much as an expedient to keep people happy and I needed to throw in some taxes while lowering salaries -- and it worked. People got mad at me but things stabilized quickly. Now I am loved by my people and my leaders and my commanders. I am just finishing the Age of Revolution, and I had no problems with that at all. But don't ask me for advice on things. I know I have made a mess of a lot of things.

So now I'm wondering what to do next. Do I continue my invasion of Naxhausen all the way to the end? I have a major power on each flank and have left those flanks open while hoping that one or both wouldn't attack me. So far that has worked. It also appears that at some point I will have to take on Lozericca to get a win. I have been second to them in victory points right up until the turn I took Flint, last turn. It would be great to get Primafel fighting Lozericca. And what about the spiders. Are they going to be content to just sit there?

I will try to put together an update when I hit 100 turns.

If they are militarist, you never get any deals except Science and maybe Trade. Isolationists are the most defensive faction you can help into power.

If they are Republican, you maybe be able to get the deals if you help the right faction into power. Not the Syndics.

No idea regarding Theocracies, but even there should be a less hostile one. Humanists are the most Diplomatic, Crusaders the least.

Turn 100 update. The offensive collapses.

First one correction. I was not at turn 70 in my first AAR. It was about turn 83. Somehow I looked at something wrong when I typed that. Looking at save games later I realized the mistake. Not that it matters that much.

Here is my situation at turn 100.

Image

Following my last update I continued my offensive into Naxhausen, with the main operations northward with a goal of capturing Gallia and with a smaller operation eastward. Without going into detail, because those of you who have played more than I have know the details, I started to run into growing logistical problems as my supply lines got more and more extended. I began to work to fix the problems, but I continued my attacks hoping I could overcome the enemy before things got critical. I almost did it. I reached the outskirts of Gallia although I could see my combat power was fading. I was able to launch one attack on Gallia with 8-1 odds, but it failed. After that I realized that I had to take the defensive. Naxhausen had well supplied forces moving in to defend the Gallia area, and they also had managed to put together an offensive in the east that was threatening my force there.

So I retreated a few hexes, created a defensive line, switched several formations to a defensive posture, and brought in another formation to help shore up the line while I began to work on logistics. Here is a snapshot of the area of operations bottlenecks at turn 100. It looked much worse a couple of turns earlier. I've probably done a poor job managing it, but I am learning what works and what doesn't as I go. I now have rail lines going all the way up to Flint, so I am hoping that will help.

Image

The last several turns Naxhausen has launched attacks and had heavy losses while my losses have been light. I see the last couple of turns that my replacement flow has started up again. For several turns as I continued to advance my units were getting no replacements at all.

My plan is to rest and recover for a few more turns and then resume the offensive.

Diplomatically I did make some overtures to Naxhausen, but they are not interested. My situation with the other major powers is about the same, though I have managed to grow friendlier with Primafel. I mainly want to try to keep them from attacking me, which would create some obvious big problems. Lozericca continues its war with Naxhausen, but it advances slowly. And Primafel's invasion of Naxhausen seems to have been defeated. Nevertheless, Naxhausen is in a bad position at war with all the other major powers.

At the same time the spiders suddenly declared war on me. That really concerned me for a moment, but I only encountered one spidery unit, defeated it, and advanced a few hexes into spidery territory and stopped. The one spidery unit retreated and vanished. I really don't want to engage in a major offensive into spidery territory at the moment. I am quite happy if they don't bother me.

I must say that the faltering offensive into Naxhausen seemed like a classic example of the logistics problems of any modern campaign. Rather than getting angry at the game, I was really fascinated just watching it happen. It had a definite feeling of realism. I saw it happening and realized I probably should have stopped a couple of turns sooner but wanted to see how far I could push things. As it was, I was able to extricate myself without major problems, except for nearly getting some units encircled in the east. I had to pull another formation I was holding in reserve into that battle to stabilize things.

My economic situation is fine. I started losing oil points after noticing a couple of wells dried up, so a dug a couple of new wells and expanded a couple to solve that problem.

I am starting to get some interesting things involving energy and other things in research, but I'm not ready to talk about that yet. I have to look at it more.

My "NATO Symbol" is a bit rusty, but I think you got several formations with Regiment Sized Subunits there?
Including a few tank regiments?
The sheer amount of Food and Ammo would propably collapse most supply systems (to my knowledge, fuel, water, energy and emergency food travels for free).

And your Strategic Base seems to be all the way back in Castello - you should propably move it to Flint. Except for the right side, wich seems to be all the way back in Hogan?
I think your plan was moving it all the way to Gallia, but as you figured out your supply lines can not handle that far of Castello/Hogan.

Turn 129 update. I have conquered Naxhausen, and it has ceased to exist except as two lonely coastal hexes adjacent to Primafel. See my first post for the location of these places.

Image

This turned into a three phase operation with a major logistics decision after Phase Two.

Phase One was an offensive northward to take Gallia, after I had restored my logistics and had my units supplied again. That was fast and efficient.

Phase Two was an offensive with three prongs eastward with the main goal being the capture of the capital of Naxhausen in the far northeast. I advanced on a broad front to keep Naxhausen from concentrating its forces and to prevent Primafel from taking more land than I wanted, since both Lozericca and Primafel remained at war with Naxhausen. This bogged down along the line of the points of the blue arrows, again due to logistial problems. My supply situation got really bad, and at one point Naxhausen launched an offensive in the south that threatened a breakthrough. So once again I stabilized my line, by retreating a couple of hexes and putting formations in a defensive posture and trying to restore my supply lines again.

Finally I made the decision to create a second SHQ in Flint. On the map you can see it as S-4. The reason it is S-4 is that I had tried creating a second SHQ early in the game and realized that was a really stupid idea at the time, and I had briefly created one in the north but had decided again it was a bad idea. The immediate result of creating 4th SHQ was what appeared to be a logistics disaster. This lasted about two turns while I worked the kinks out, improved my supply lines, created more roadblocks, and learned how to transfer supplies from S-1 to S-4 as needed. Then 3 to 4 turns after creating S-4, BOOM, suddenly my units in combat in Naxhausen, which amounted to about 80% of all my combat strength, were in good supply again. Was that the best way to do it? I don't know. I just know that I was unable to create viable supply lines with just one SHQ far removed from the action. But what I did worked.

It was also at the start of this period that I had another oil shortage and had to create or expand more oil wells, but I also got that under control. I was concerned about that for a couple of turns because I was running low on oil, and there was no oil on the market to buy.

I then initiated Phase 3, the final conquest of Naxhausen, and just rolled over them. I am the master on Naxhausen, sitting between the other two major powers. That is either a very bad situation or a very good one depending on what happens next. My relations have reversed now. I have poor relations with Lozericca and good relations with Primafel now. I am paying Lozericca off periodically and Primafel has stopped asking for money. I have tried obtaining non-aggression pacts with both nations, but I get messages that both are being led by factions that aren't agreeable to that move. And I'm not sure how to make them agreeable. I've tried some covert actions to help the factions not in power in both nations but am not sure if that helps any. And any actions to improve relations don't seem to help either.

As for technology, I now have high speed rail but am wondering if it replaces or augments regular rail. Is it redundant to have rail and high speed rail stations in my cities or necessary? I don't know.

I also have just started construction of two nuclear power plants, and I am now able to reserch tactical nukes, howitzer fired, if I want to.

And the spiders have made no further move. I'm leaving them alone if they leave me alone.

Image

My next move, looking at the victory totals, appears to be that I must in invade Lozericca to win.

Looks good. I don't know the answer about high-speed rail, as I'm just researching it for the first time. Which reveal-map setting did you choose at the outset? I'm kind of envious that you don't have any completely dark fog-of-war spots on your map. It makes it nicer to read. I might try your setting for my next game.

I used DasTactic's recommended settings from his Youtube SHADOW EMPIRE Tips and Tricks ~ 01 Game setup for First Time Players.

DasTactic game setup for first time players

That includes Partial FOW, which allows you to see the map but does not allow you to see units and other more detailed information unless the units are very close to you or you have really good recon.

Here are the settings, screenshot from DasTactic's video. I think that's okay since I'm linking the video and have recommended his tips and tricks series several times. It is the longest by far Youtube tutorial series, which is what it actually is, that I have ever watched, and it is well worth watching. He gives a detailed description of the FOW options, and all the options, and why he chose what he did for new players.

The march to victory has begun. Turn 137. I've decided to attempt to overwhelm Lozericca with a sudden attack to grab enough points to get a victory. My main attacking force (1) contains all my armor and has met no resistance. I began the invasion two turns ago. I have one infantry force advancing northward in the west and grabbing land (2). (3) and (4) are newly organized infantry formations that will be entering Lozericca shortly. Since my armor heavy force was already in the north for the conquest of Naxhausen, I simply moved them to the border with Lozericca and invaded. I hope to simply overwhelm them and win on points before I start encountering major logistics problems as I advance. My logistics situation inside Redwolf is excellent at the moment with high speed rail working to all major cities and zero bottlenecks at the start. In fact nearly everything was green. My one annoyance is rebel activity in Gallia, and I have had to keep one division there to whack rebel moles. I should know in a few turns if this works. Even if it doesn't, it is fun.

Victory on turn 170. I won the game the turn I captured Orilijon, the last remaining city of Lozericca. It was a tough slog. Lozericca's cities were well away from its borders, which made it harder to get at. I had lots of logistics problems and had to manage that every 2-3 turns. I also started running short of metal the last 20 turns or so but managed to have just enough to keep things going. Near the end Primafel suddenly declared war on me and attacked me in the east and west, but they were weak attacks. I responded by invading Primafel in the east. All in all, damn that was fun.

I agree, the logistics make this game special.

In my current game, a second minor declared war on me from the north while I was attacking my western neighbor. Thankfully I had just made a second leg brigade, so I used them for a hasty defense against the north while finishing my conquest of the west. I then moved the western forces north.

Wily though the enemy was and rushed a spearhead between my two groups; yes, indeed, cutting off supplies. Both brigades were light infantry each with two recon buggy bttns attached. (I've been starting at the lowest tech level - my first model design is usually for a 50 mm armored buggy with medium engine.) I was forced to fall back with my entire western group and pivot my northern line a bit for the two groups to meet up.

I would never have written this much about one war for something like Civ. This game is inspiring.
