A-10s in Poland prove they can land anywhere

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

A-10s in Poland prove they can land anywhere

Post by ivanov »

This aircraft was designed for war
Since Monday, four A-10s from the 354th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron have practiced landing at a Polish airfield at Nowe Miasto that has been decommissioned for years. The runway itself is old and cracked, and conditions at the former Warsaw Pact airfield are spartan.
Lest we forget.

And the USAF wants to dump them so they can use F-22's & B-2's to go after ISIL's technicals... [8|]

No, they want to dump them because they are old and maintenance costs are increasing. They are great for operating over areas without any IADS but wouldn't last a second in a war against an adversary with a modern air defense system. I love that old pig but it's time to go. between parts, pilots and maintenance, it's just not cost effective when precision munitions allow CAS from any altitude.

They're old because they stopped producing them. And to my point, ISIL has no modern air defense system. Precision munitions is only part of the equation. If your point is that using F-22's and B-1's or (someday) the hypothetically capable F-35 is a more cost effective option that an A-10 for what we are doing now in Iraq and Afghanistan, then we are not going to agree.

The air force has been intentionally killing off the A-10 for years in favor of more expensive platforms.. http://foxtrotalpha.jalopnik.com/at-what-point-does-the-usafs-war-against-the-a-10-becom-1685239179

The B-52 is more than 50 years old and it's still doing it's job. Spend the money. There is no reasonable replacement for the A-10.

Total Aside... Captain, I know you have a lot of free time ... [;)] .... Please put out a remake of Flight Commander 2 God, how I loved running my A-10 squadron through the first Iraq war in that game...

I know that Sandys flew throughout the Vietnam War.. I THINK that the A-10 was its successor, although not direct, time-wise...

I'd love to see someone make a game along those lines, tho. I'm not into sims, but I like the strategy, and FC2 had some role-playing elements also... Just a great game for its time!
