GGC:Battle#2 Day One

Post by jhyden »

The next battle is located at the region called Best. Northwest of Eindhoven and Southwest of the American Drop Zone at Son Heath.

- I decided at SETUP, that I was NOT going to defend the bridge.
- I spent some time figuring out the BEST direction to withdraw to.
- My main focus then became the BEST way to keep my troops alive.

Only the Command unit has good morale. No armor this time but three AA guns along with Ad-hoc and MG.

- The location of the three AA guns were fixed so I could not move them. That left me with four units to defend the bridge.

> Initially I setup the command team w/adhoc in a forward position to defend the village. This spot had an excellent LOS into the upper road.
> MG34 and Light AA Gun w/lengthy LOS, could have provided great covering fire.

- I ultimately deployed within the village while hoping to delay as long as possible.

> Gaining from experience at Valdswaard, I decided to always keep ad-hoc infantry units within command radius.
> I checked LOS very carefully learning that 'any' experience would help these troopers.

- I had a GENERAL idea of what to expect when destroying a bridge (from the manual) but was anxious to find out. [8D]

Overview:

US Paratroopers advance along the road and gets ambushed! Other US troops began to appear then disappear.

- Ultimately, the only unit to get any action was the 88 near the middle of the map.

Perhaps it was the anxiety I felt regarding demolition but equally it was the carnage I witnessed...

> Multiple teams of paratroopers were sent into direct-fire counterattacks and got pummeled: It was UGLY!
> The troopers never had a chance as they continued to attack from the front.
> I then began to consider TACTICS. I was thinking about the best way to assault a fixed position.

- During the attacks, the Allies began to mortar the area around the 88 but was off the mark.
- Nothing else except these direct attacks seemed to be happening...

… because in a hurried decision, I decided to destroy the bridge.
