Wanting to get this but

Close Combat: Panthers in the Fog is the first new release (not a re-make of a previous games) in years in the critically acclaimed Close Combat series. It details the desperate German counter-attack at Mortain, the last chance of the Wehrmacht to stave off defeat in Normandy. Can you match the tenacity of the American defenders of Hill 314? Or can you succeed where the Panzers failed, driving through to the sea and changing history? Improved 32-bit graphics and the ability to control more squads than ever bring the Close Combat engine to a new level.

Wanting to get this but

Post by Numdydar »

It has been a long time since I played these. Back when Atomic Games was around [:)].

I have been wanting to jump back into these and thought this version would be a good starting point versus some of the other CC titles Matrix has for sale. Is that true or are some of the other titles still better. I have read that some think Arnum and/or Longest Day were the best.

I already have the Steel Panther series (both matrix's version and Shrapnal Games one too lol) and have really enjoyed both versions. So I also wondered how the new CC versions compare to those (besides better graphics of course [:)]).

Any feedback is appriciated.

Personally I haven't played any of the other versions for several months now, though I intend on going back to the longest day when the Meuse mod is re-released

I like the larger scale and I like the unit selections of panthers

Meuse is out for TLD S/L. Haven't kept up to date really with goings on with updates and such with PITF, but is TEJSZD planning to convert it to PITF and if he is, it would be the 1st major mod yet. A good sign for future mods to make their way. Fingers crossed..

The price is too much for me and I wont be buying it. The game is a remake of the old with a high price.

PiTF is far from a remake:

-32b graphics. I think this alone is worth it.
-New operation
-All new maps
-New way of selecting troops
-New strategic options: interdiction, arty mission, high ground.

PiTF is great. But my favorite of the remakes so far is Last Stand Arnhem.

johnsilver,

For Meuse I have not done any work yet nor plan to move to PiTF as the amount of changes would probably make it easier to start from scratch.

The next things for Meuse is to get to the strat changed to a 64 map version followed by moving it LSA.

Numdydar,

I agree with Theel, my favorite is LSA too. PiTF has some better graphics and some new features over LSA but also left out a couple things from LSA....

The eye candy in PitF, the much better mortar system, and the ability to transport troops and guns is hard to forget. I think there's no going back to older versions for me. Also, what you see in the game currently is just the tip of the iceberg compared to what's possible with the new 32bit graphic system.
