Jeanne's Last Jaunt, 2009 - new beta for testing

Post by Mgellis »

Version 2 uploaded at 9:30 CST Aug 13 2023.
-------------------------------------------------
A new scenario for testing...

It's 2009 and a coup in Guinea has France trying to get their people out of an increasingly unstable situation. They've sent the aging helicopter cruiser Jeanne d'Arc and some supporting forces to get the job done. It shouldn't be too difficult, right?

(This scenario takes advantage of Command's cargo features. Be ready to pick up people with helicopters.)

As always, please let me know what you think. Anything missing? Anything you would do different? Anything that needs to be fixed? Any stupid typos in the briefing? Anything that could be done to make this scenario more fun and more challenging? Any other suggestions or comments?

Thanks in advance!

I've completed this scenario. Overall a nice small scale situation to try out/practice cargo ops with helicopters.

But I do have some critiques:

1) Perhaps make the Gunieans a little more aggressive from the start, so to give the player the freedom to engage earlier. Trying to send the helos in before hostilities was a very bloody affair.

2) It seemed a bit too easy once I was able to engage the enemy (I ultimately decided to bait them into firing first with La Fayette's helo, which resulted in it being shot down). Only two Mig-21s, 1 Trainer, and one Hind as air threats? Only a pair of AAA sites? I think you should add a little more opposition in for some challenge.

3) Scoring needs some work. Before I was able to evac many people, I got a sudden jolt to 'Triumph' with over 1000 points. The reason isn't very clear to me. (Scoring log below)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll start working up the revised version soon.

I was concerned Guinea would not be a huge challenge, but they don't have a very big military. I was trying to model the scenario around what they were likely to have had available in 2009. Maybe I'll add a few "donations" from the Chinese or a couple of extra patrol boats. ;)

Just curious...did you find the mine field? (Maybe I have to move it a bit further out.)

As for scoring, I'll definitely work on that...the irony is not lost on me that Command makes it more complicated to give players points for saving someone as opposed to killing them. :)

Thanks again for the feedback. I hope we'll hear from other people, too.

No!

I did lose the La Fayette in one playthrough where I strictly adhered to ROE (allowing Gunieans to fire first).
Led to a Guinean PT boat launching a salvo and blasting the ship to my total surprise.

Hi, I cannot load the scenario because of a missing database, in the screenshot you still use v1307.19, but did you created it with v1328, and so v500 or v501 of the database is needed?

Anyway could find this oob for Guinea Forces in 2009, I hope it is useful:

Just uploaded version 2. (Yes, this time I mean it. The reason it was missing for 30 minutes is that I uploaded it and then realized I had not fixed a couple of minor errors I had meant to take care of. Sorry!)

Main changes...

* Modified scoring so it should be a bit harder to get a triumph (you get fewer points for each transfer of personnel).

* Effectively doubled Guinean forces to make them more of a challenge.

* Added a teleport action to add a second group of evacuees later in the scenario

* Reduced the time frame from 30 to 20 hours

* Removed a mine field that did not seem to do anything for the scenario.

Please let me know what you think. What can I do to make the scenario more interesting, more credible, more challenging, and more fun?

Thanks in advance!

Has anyone had a chance to play Version 2 yet? Is there anything else I need to do or is it ready for the Community Scenario Pack? Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

====================

I have it queued up for this afternoon/evening. I did play version 1 a couple days ago.

My only critique, other than the fairly weak OpFor is that the stranded civilians can't be evacuated using a cargo mission. They're on an allied (friendly) side, but can't be added to a cargo mission created on the player's French side. (At least I can't figure out how to do it.) I can pick up the civilian units manually, and that's fine, but not via an actual cargo mission that would do it autonomously.

EDIT ===>

There are 3 missions for the Guinea side that did not fire; Kill (*HostilePlanes *HostileShips *Rebels) - Strike (No Targets). The APC's assigned never moved, the assigned aircraft didn't launch. A pair of MiG-21's and a Yak appeared early on, and a pair of Hind's took off individually at different times too. I lost the Lynx early on. I had it assigned to a Maritime Patrol in AO and the Rafale's hadn't made it that far when it was jumped by one of those MiG-21's. The AA capabilities of the French warships is... sad. Anyway, it's a cool little scenario but some of those missions on the AI side don't seem to be working right. They might need some LUA, but I'm not an expert by any means on that.

I completed the scenario with a score of 370. Below is the breakdown:

Hello
i have tried the version embeded in the community scenario pack on steam.

Was fine and fun. Keeping air superiority during the whole operation is a little tricky and a damn chopper killed few french soldiers (my bad).

Anyway I have 2 more important problems :

it's 20:20Z and the 2nd group of peoples is not arrived. Is it normal (randomization or something like that) ?

i did not understand how to pick the peoples in my choppers and bring them back to the Jeanne. I read the manual, watch tutos and as i understand you need a source to set a cargo transfer mission and there is no source. Fria airport is a neutral airport.

is there something i missed ?

The 2nd group of evacuees should show up...although it's possible they were intercepted by Guinean forces. (They're supposed to appear at the same spot as the other evacuees, so it's possible you did not see them if all the other evacuees were still there; the new ones would just get stacked onto to old ones.)

To pick up evacuees, you will need to set the helicopters for a transport mission (already done) and then use the select unit for pickup option in the unit orders menu. Since there are only ten people, you can pick up more than one group. Then you take them back to the Jeanne...I think they unload onto the ship automatically but you can transfer them as cargo if you have to.

I hope this helps.

Finaly....it's helped. Think this function need some improvement : accessible in mission and more user friendly. You have to switch to unit view and select the good number of units to carry otherwise it doesn't work and there is no feed back such as "too heavy" or "too many" thing(s) to carry.

Enjoyable scenario, medium complexity. An other one please :D and thank's foryour help.

Which map view do you condider more suitable for this scenario taking into account the vegetation of the jungle?

Not really a super expert with Command maps. The terrain map is probably useful, but I don't think it's critical.

Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks.
I'm not an expert with Command maps too and I'm a bit confused with the different map options.

Hey Mark,

that's a fun scenario, thanks!

I felt I had much more airpower than I thought would be available in that context.

As far as I know, the French were not using the Rafale abroad then and were still relying on their Mirage, 2000, and F1 :

Maybe a couple 2000C, one or two 2000D, one F1CR, and the C135FR.

As for the Jeanne d'Arc ("la Jeanne"), it was in between two deployments in your time frame :

The last cruise was escorted by the FFL Courbet. A Panther, from the 36F, could have been aboard.
The previous one, which wandered in the Indian Ocean though, was escorted by the F70-type ASW frigate "D640 Georges Leygues", also on its last cruise. Could be with a Lynx.

On la Jeanne were a 2x Alouette III (22S squadron) and 2x Gazelle (could be HOT).

As for the Super Frelon, there were 7 still in service at that time, in an S&R role. Maybe a couple would be there, plus a few Puma from the Army (a Pirate one would be fat).

Anyhow, thanks again Mark.

Cheers

Hi, ClaudeJ. Thanks for the information. Netmarine looks like it will be a very useful source for building scenarios.

Thanks again.
