[WAD]Plea for bigger piers

Post by Rongor »

Hi there.
Currently we have following lengths of piers to dock vessels:
11 - 17 m
17 - 25 m
25 - 45 m
45 - 200 m
200 - 500 m

Frankly I can't imagine any use for the first three at all, considering the size of naval assets being much longer in most cases. The fourth option of 45 to 200 meters offers just about enough length for a frigate and a patrol vessel, not more. To rebuild a regular naval base you would have to place the 5th size, probably several of them, to have sufficient space to host a squadron. This occasionally also doesn't represent real world, as there are bases with really looong piers in use, Rota for example features a pier of more than 1000 m length.

So it really would help to have additional longer piers in the list of structures.

Also it seems that CMANO always assumes ships docking with their broadsides along a pier, using up available space pretty quick. This also doesn't have to be that way in real live, for example in Constanta (Romania), where most vessels dock with their stern or bow sections at the pier. So the calculation underneath, which currently seems to simply subtract every docked vessel's length from the used pier to verify available piers space may need more tolerance added.

The bottom line might be, that I would consider it helpful to have a single-unit-naval-base, similar to the available single-unit-airfields, which would conveniently accept unlimited attached naval units of any numbers and sizes.

Thank you for any improvement on this.

You realize that there is capacity to host 6 Ford class CVNs, 12 Burkes, or 16 Freedom class ships onto one Extra large pier 200-500m. It doesn't give you 1000m, but if you put two there...

I made different observations. I tried to attach 4 German Type F123 frigates to the extra large pier and it denied hosting them, telling me "Out of space! Unable to add boats to host - Exceeded maximum docking space."
A Brandenburg class frigate has a length of 138.9 m according to the db. The extra large pier accepts 3 of them. Not 4.

I also tried your 6 Fords (333 m each). Same issue. Not a surpise, only one Ford gets accepted. Please try yourself. What you claimed is impossible.

No wonder, you are using DB 444 and I tested it with 441. So the calculation of available docking spaced changed in the last 3 builds? Can you tell how it works now?

Pie for Rudd then. Thanks guys.

Any chance to clarify how available space is calculated currently?

NP, I think it works great.

The pier capacity now, I think, takes care of most of the ways that ships 'park', two, three, four, etc side by side or as you mentioned perpendicular to the pier.

In some instances it may be too much(that 1000m pier/breakwall in Rota couldn't handle 6 carriers, but a 500/1000m pier that they could park on both sides and park side-by-side could), but you can justify by saying they are parked in the harbor, flexibility for the scen author.
