[BETA V1.03.03] Air to Ground attacks versus AFVs - observations & balancing

• Aircraft weapons were using penetration value when attacking AFVs when they should have been using anti-armor value. Fixed.

And the point being that A2G before was all about DISrupting (concerning AFVs).

Initial Remarks:

• I's hard to get all points straight and make this not a 10k words essay using 50 pictures, 30 charts and 15 scenario files/saves. - Attached is my Beta testing setup New A2G.rar, if you find flaws in it let me know ways to improve - I am aware of the small AA capabilities of IS-2 Tanks.
• Some things will be mentioned several times, framing it all in a more educated/organized way would be nice but I guess it's understandable as is.
• The changes made affect Cannons/MGs as well as Bombs. I initially wasn't aware of the latter untilI found out today, so this aspect may be looked into later on in a more comprehensive way or the Devs already - with this short post see a way to balance it better (see Closing Remarks).
• I guess we all can agree that how it was before was completely not working as in any historical context possible, pls do not start a historical debate in this thread, instead links to this thread in a new thread if you plan on doing so. Bombs got bigger and bigger in TacB usage due to inaccuracy - this inaccuracy is it what's currently missing.

Current Issue:
TacB cannons/MGs (the planes/weapons my reports were complaining about) can now use their Cannons/MGs to penetrate AFVs, this is just part of the issue which is complained about in this thread.
This is my testing setup. A simple Ground Attack order of 1 AG of Ju 87G vs 500 IS-2 1944.

The other part of the issue being, that now also BOMBS can use the Anti-Armor value to kill AFVs, as can be seen here in a old patch vs Beta comparison (both tests are 1 AG of Ju87 using 1000kg bomb vs 500 IS-2 on GC Axis turn 1 - the IS-2 has some AA potential but from testing this seems neglectable).
Special note to this is that in the new system where penetrations can be somwhat tracked I got a "penetration ratio" of Top*97 + Front*57 + Side*2 for this test with Bombs.

Points to go through:

1. The game uses the current "Anti-Armor" value to target AFVs, it randomly shoots any side of the tank. (tested by giving a gun sufficient Anti-Armor (350) to also penetrate front/sides)
   -> Combat log of 14 Missions with ~25*Ju 87G having it's BK3.7cannon gave entries for ~258front hits (161 armor) + ~255top hits (28 armor) + ~7side hits (94 armor). Log example (fully Attached BK3.7 - targeting test 350 (Turn 001 6-22-1941 Ax).txt)

2. As pointed out in this post there is range dropoff in G2G combat. For A2G usage this does not seem to be the case, as can be seen in the following Log-File where I changed the Anti-Armor value to 28.

3. A2A/A2G weapons have ranges like 6000 of the BK3.7, this causes the planes to shoot from distances like:
   "IS-2 M1944 damaged by 37mm Cannon BK3.7 - pen 69 - arm 28 - range 3536 (air)".
   No matter what's the unit of that 6000 or 3536, even if it's feet it's still 1km...also Bombs show ranges between the hundrets/thousands.
4. The Anti-Armor value versus the Armor (mostly top/front) is a yes/no decision
   • if Anti-Armor>/=Armor it wil penetrate (at any distance)
   • if Anti-Armor<Armor it will never do anything other than DISrupting
5. Changing the Accuracy from 5 to 1 did not give any serious difference, changing it to (-10) did decrease the kills in my testing setup by about ~35%. Using negative numbers is something special tho and the impact on A2A is currently unknown for me.

Possible (partial) Solutions:
Coding:
1. The low number of side-shot attempts in A2G is suspicious and making each side the same chance to "attempt a hit/penetration" would lower the "top-kill-ratio" for small cannons (~25mm penetration and so on) to about ~33% instead of now ~49%.

2. Planes seem to do multiple attacks from different distances (as they supposedly do in A2A) which leads to 1 plane attacking multiple times (that's how I interpret the Combat logs) - reducing this to one attack would reduce the efficency and make up for some of the "missing" range penetration drop-off.

3. Closely related to "2.", attacking ground targets from 3000ft+++ distance with guns midair.

5. Reduce A2G accuracy of MGs/Cannons (and Bombs) of planes (would be also a Code change required I guess since there is only one "Accuracy" which supposedly has also an effect on A2A Combat (I guess?!).

2/4. Reduce the Anti-Armor values from currently point blank/100m distances to ~300-400m/1000-1300feet - and maybe further reduce it by a small percentage to account for varying angles of impact. Since it's a yes/no this would "shuffle" the plane X vs tank Y list so to have little more accuracy to which plane is able to kill which type of tank in a "historic" mission

5. Reduce the Accuracy of A2A Cannons/MGs - as mentioned this may have an impact on A2A and from little testing gave only good results (in my testing Setup) with changing from 5 to (-10).

Closing Remarks:

• The new System eneables bombs/cannons to actually have an impact, yes it needs balance. That's why the community needs to be patient and think about solutions and hope for the Devs to be willing and able to implement the changes needed.
• It is worth testing some more tactical usage of AA (same hex/Adjacent Hexes) now, since having too few is obviously visible now, since tanks no longer only get DISrupted by air, so you lose the Tanks even when you defend a Hex successfully (yes the losses may be too high currently!)
• I did not go deep into the BOMB changes to use Anti-Armor as mentioned. Nevetheless this has a huge impact on the overall Balance since even a 50kg bomb has a Anti-Armor value of 27mm, which potentially could kill almost any tank from the top. This obviously is realistic in terms of actual possibilities with that bomb, but to make things balanced there needs to be changes to Accuracy (so less bombs actually hit).
  • I am ASSUMING that Bombs penetrations are also a yes/no question (so no partial/almost=Damaged or something like this)
  • I am not sure about the usage of "Blast" vs AFVs, but since it's (I guess) also used vs soft targets it's dangerous terrain to tweak

First Assessment Conclusion:
Both, Cannons/MGs as well as Bombs from my perspective need a decrease in overall Accuracy (Code or Data), so the weapons are still able to kill target X with Y armor, but it's less likely that they actually hit it. The current hit ratios are way too high thinking about hitorical capabilites.
Another approach (additional to doing some Balancing as pointed out) could be to have a new look at AA's efficiency in denying A2G missions to take effect, which would encourage the usage/placement of AA ...but this is another rabbit hole to go through.

As gun penetration is used otherwise in A2A we could repurpose HVAP penetration into A2G gun armor penetration while using anti-armor as pure HE effect as before (so mostly disrupting)
For A2G uns coming into action we coul limit max range to 10 or 20 percent of given gun range.

Nice work looking into the combat details behind the scenes. I wonder if another large issue besides penetration is the amount of shots fired by the support aircraft. It's likely that every plane in the sortie is getting a shot at an AFV, but is that realistic? It seems more likely that only a fraction of the planes in each sortie would even find AFV's to shoot at.

Follow up on this. I am testing this on 1.03.03_beta (AS THE TESTS BEFORE)

I am currently trying to figure out how many shots/bombs a plane can drop/use/shoot in a Mission. From what I see there may be something off regarding the ordonance planes have at hand. The Planes afaik do not have a "AMMO" amount like Ground elements usually have (I am looking forward to test whether that "AMMO cap/amount" seriously stops Ground elements from shooting in the near future).

CANNONS:

I used my old Ju 87G with BK3.7 against 500x IS-2 1944 (removed the IS-2s AAMG) setup. The Ju87 G has 2xBK3.7 and each of those has a Rate of Fire of 12. Historically they've had 12 "Bullets in each Gunpod, so 24 in total. This means that the following 10 hits are a theoretical possible but rather unlikely. And due to the following results seen in the BOMBS test later on, I assume that at each distance/range the Ju87G is able to fire 24shots (so "Bursting whole RoF/Magazine in each engagement as for ground units), so in this test this would be 48 shots in total fired.
Note that this is an outlier, but it shows the issue the best. You can see the other missions in the Combat log and count the hits yourself.

So as can be seen here the Plane seems to have had

• 5 engagements/hits for effect at 2327range
• 5 engagements/hits for effect at 230range

I can not identify the individual Pilot but his "Skill" was 94 (which is a mix of EXP&MOR).

Edit: IMPORTANT NOTE: I Used old LOCKED generic data to test that numbers, the .05Beta increased the Accuracy of the Cannons from 5 to 20 already. As you can see in my next post this vastly increases the Killratio into the ~70s (+/- 20) for the cannons.

BETA V1.03.05 Update

Using the same setup as before (IS-2 with it's AAMG as in my 1st Post in this Thread) kill numbers in 1 week of ~350Sorties changed from:

Ju 87G with BK3.7 ~180-220kills >>> to ~1-3 ...and like ~10 damaged
Ju 87B-R with 1x1000kg Bomb ~200kills >>> to ~20-35 and ~10 damaged

To show how bad the Cannon is performing (against IS-2 only penetratable from the top), I tested Level Bombers (Do 17Z-2) with 4x250kg and got 12 kills (just one test done).
Okay, now let's see how Cannons can handle a T-34 which they also can penetrate from the sides and without the T-34s having any AAMG!

Enemy: T-34 M1943 (completely no AA)
Ju 87G with BK3.7 >>> 10kills and ~15 damaged
Ju 87B-R with 1x1000kg >>> 37kills and ~8 damaged
Ju 87B-R with 1x250kg+4x50kg >>> 27kills and ~26 damaged
Do 17Z-2 with 4x250kg Bombs >>> 30kills and ~22 damaged

Conclusion:
Although able to penetrate the T-34 from the side + top now and flying Dive bombing mission (TacB) the Ju 87G with it's 2xBK3.7 Cannons is vastly outperformed by Do 17Z-2 flying at 9000ft (LB) with 4x250kg Loadout.
I currently see no incentive in using the Ju 87G (not having any "Loadouts") nor using the HS 129B with it's 'Tank Buster' Loadout (30mm Cannon MK103 [not tested but assuming it is comparable to the BK3.7]).

Concerning the overall tests done I feel like there could be a higher ratio of DAMaged tanks (compared to the DEStroyed ones), but that may be just a individual preference trying to imagine how ratios are supposed to be in a WW2 scenario and comparing it too much to losses/ratios occuring to manpower.

Historical Classification:
Now since the coding seems to work out there is room for debates on efficiency of "Tank Buster" planes in WW2 I guess.

From what I know the bombs of the Ju 87 got bigger and bigger since the accuracy was too bad and they needed to increase the blast radius to achieve success. That's partially the reason why they came up with the AT guns/bigger Cannons mounted on/under planes. How effective that was seems to be rather unknown/highly debated.

But 350planes scoring 10kills+15damaged (T-34 test) without any AA seems a little too little for my imagination.
And from a gameplay perspective (not historic) I don't see a reason to waste pilots for such DES/DAM ratios, I guess if it'd be way more DAMaged results (like 60 or so) it'd also be alright and make up for the few DEStroyed ones and it'd represent the smaller damage capabilities of cannons compared to large bombs.

Yes, the cannons don't seem to be great weapons in the game at the moment. For one, there's nothing that makes them target vehicles more than any other aircraft. Second, they don't do better than bombs. We may try to get them to target vehicles more often, but we don't yet know how easy that might be as that's a different part of the code than what we've been changing recently. The data could be adjusted further for the devices to give them higher accuracy or rate of fire, which are the two items that would boost their chance to hit AFVs (but likely also other ground elements as well). It would be great to get an idea of just how effective these weapons were. As you say, there seems to be some disagreement about just how effective they were.

Changing the Accuracy of the BK3.7 from
5 to 150 caused ~300kills instead of ~10 (against the 500xT-34)
5 to 25 caused ~70kills
....So only looking at ground combat, this could be a solution, but not sure how changing Accuracy works out in A2A, but other 20mm A2A cannons also have accuracies of ~21, so the BK3.7 may be already good with 10 or so which one needs to figure out depending of the balance aimed for.

I just realized you're using locked "old" generic data in your test scenario. You need to unlock the data. It changed in 1.03.05. You will get very different results. Also, you really need to run at least 2 of each test and average (3 is better), because there is a decent amount of randomness. Now if there is only 1 target type in the unit being attacked, one source of randomness is removed since you'll always pick the same targets. I got 90 kills the first time I ran your test with the 1.03.05 data, so quite a change.

I see you already changed the Accuracy to 20 in .05, I missed that.
But correct me if I am wrong (trying to understand the system), the generic Data is everything visible in the Editor, right? So this Accuracy changes are most likely the only difference between the tests?!

I now clicked "update all generic data" in the "MAIN" Scenario Editor screen but kept that locked state on "YES", the Accuracy changed to 20 for those Cannons. After that I renamed it and Saved it and now testing with that new Scenario.
Is it correct how I updated the data or am I missing something by doing it this way?

I know it wasn't properly and scientific it was more to "ballpark" the ratios, I already chose to have 14 Missions of ~350Sorties to make up for my lazyness and the big differences between individual Missions (~24planes), maybe I should "multiply" that setup by x2 to so It'd be ~1k Sorties and give a better average in one run or even x10 to have 3500Sorties if I am already on it.

I got 90 kills the first time I ran your test with the 1.03.05 data, so quite a change.

I Updated my Scenario with the BK3.7 vs T-34 as I wrote above and got 54, 70, 53, 49, 69, 55, 58, 44...I never got into the 80s or 90s. Have I done something wrong or you just got that one lucky punch with your 90kill test?

This is one area where there is little actual controversy since there were a lot of contemporary empirical reports that were done. The U.S. and especially the British did a lot of on the ground AARs to determine the effectiveness of AT AG weapons and what they found was that the chances of a Tac AC knocking out a tank was basically almost nil.

results in a nutshell:

1. massive over claiming: The number of KO'd tanks on the ground that showed any sign of having been hit by a AG weapon, let alone destroyed, was around 3-5% of what the pilots were claiming;

2. difficulty spotting: Because of allied air, the Germans generally moved their tanks at night and kept them hidden in camouflaged position during the day which were also usually well guarded by AA weapons. The British carried out various tests which showed that Allied pilots had great difficulty in spotting any tank in a fighting position, even when they had a general idea where they were;

3. accuracy: Even when they could spot a tank, WW2 AG weapons, whether bombs, rockets, cannons were very inaccurate and the chances of getting a hit was very low. During the Falaise battles in 44, Allied pilots had the ideal conditions since German tanks were moving in the open in daylight in clear weather on roads in a small area. Even then, post action AARs found that very few tanks showed any signs of having been hit by AG weapons, most of the KO'd tanks had been abandoned and destroyed by their own crews when they ran out of fuel or became stuck in the massive traffic jams;

4 effectiveness: Even if they could get a hit, many of the AG weapons could not destroy a tank. AP bombs could, but you need a direct hit to kill, a near miss may not cause any damage at all. Cannons, 20mm, 37mm would be fired at a shallow angle so would bounce off most areas they would typically hit on a Panther/Tiger, although they would be more effective against soft skinned vehicles;

The most effective use of air power against tanks was through interdiction, air patrols over roads, knocking out trucks, trains, railway yards, bridges, etc. Before long German tanks could not get fuel to move and were stuck because the bridges were down. A study the British did in Italy found that roughly half of the KO'd German tanks in one area had been destroyed by their own crews after they broke down, ran out of fuel or were outflanked by Allied ground forces.

Note that is for German tanks in 43-45, but the situation should be pretty much the same on the Eastern Front. This is one area where I have seen various documents over the years depending on what you are looking for.

The Allies typically use fast fighterbombers, germans typically used slower shallow-dive-capable bombers. Allied used unguided rocket , germans used 1-2 big cannon.
Its easier to aim and hit with a slow plane and a cannon. But in both cases the pilot can't really assess the inflicted damage, resulting in overclaiming.

Bombs shoudl do much more disrupting and possible damaging (blast, splinters) but hardly destruction. One needs to be really lucky to hit a static tank with a bomb, let alone a moving/maneuvering tank. Unless of course it's a true dive bomber which should have no real problem to hit a static tank.

The British did a study of "precision" bombing attacks carried out by Typhoons in 44-45 and found an average CEP of 130 yds.

Best figure I have seen for the Stuka JU87 is a CEP of 30 meters when dive bombing, meaning 50% of the bombs will fall more than 30 meters from the aiming point. Obviously that means that when targeting a tank, most bombs will miss.

Again, even if this is a low estimate, where are the hundreds of tanks destroyed by German ground attack aircraft?

FYI - as far as AC vs Tank armor penetration, he uses a baseline range of 1000 meters (1 km) (3280 feet), for his analysis of Historic Test Results. (a little off topic... He does go on to say the 8.8cm Pak 43 L/71 was capable of destroying any tank in the world out to at least 2000 meters.)

He actually admits to tank loss rates as high as 7% due to enemy AC in some cases, but we will just consider 5% for now.

The author presents this topic from the perspective that 5% is bad. I do not agree.

How many game turns is Operation Citadel? Four turns maybe? (it was pretty much over after a couple of weeks...)

Up until recently, when flying a ground support or ground attack mission, how many tanks have you killed in a mission? Any? 1? 2? I know I don't remember hardly killing that many of anything, really.

So, to kill 80 tanks over four turns from air missions... that is starting to look pretty good to me. At the end of a turn to see I killed 20 tanks from air missions, that would feel pretty good. And that is just the historic rate of AC kills.

I doubt the previous versions of WiTE2 even allowed historic levels of Tank kills (by AC).
