Ion point defense

Post by fruitgnome »

I mean ion point defense did not exist in Distant Worlds part I.
So what are the benefits? Is this the best point defense? Can you salvage ioned missiles. Are missiles permanantely inactive or get they reactivated?
What is the best point defense?

The best point defense by range, damage and fire rate, is probably the Beams PD.

However, the most efficient point defense is the Buckler PD, as it's slightly worse than Beams PD, but takes up less space.

With other point defenses it varies, and the ship hulls of each race need to be considered for this. For example, Humans are meant to focus on Missiles and Rail Guns. The Human ship hulls have a Small Weapon Bay near the engines, facing the back of the ship. That Bay is clearly meant to house Missiles PD.

Ion point defenses suck against stopping regular weapon projectiles, but they excel at killing/disabling enemy Starfighters, so they can be taken out by conventional PD. The Ion damage they do can very easily disable a Starfighter's weapons and engine.
