Curved Monitor For Wargames ?

Post by CaptainFalcon »

For 2D wargames like CMO or Campaigns Series:

Does playing with a Curved Monitor effects the feeling of the game and breaks the immersion?

Even for a little bit, and especially for the good old games like SPMBT or others?

I use this for gaming and work:
Dell U3818DW Ultrasharp 38 Curved LED Monitor with 3840 x 1600

Other than having to turn my head to look at the corners of the monitor there's no issues with modern games. On older games you make get an issue with the resolution as a game with 600x800 resolution may not fit will into the larger size, especially as the format for mine is ultra wide (2.4:1) which didn't exist several years ago. Not to mention the issues with older games and an older operating system on newer systems.

I bought one after two friends had bought them. They told me how much it improved their enjoyment of gaming and browsing the net.

I found the same and I highly recommend getting one. I play 2d and 3d games. Older games like The Campaign Series work well. CMANO is great with the extra screen size for the various information windows. Close Combat looks good too, except for Cross of Iron that does not display in 3440 by 1440.
Perhaps there is a work around for COI.

In any case I think you will enjoy enjoy a curved screen. Here is the one I bought. MSI Optix MAG341CQ

Very good. Of course your quality will vary depending on the components of your computer.

I changed my dual 24" HD setup for a 34" curved Samsung C34F791 display some eighteen months ago, no turning back for me.

Initially I used 125% desktop scaling, nowadays I mostly do not use scaling at all, so am able to benefit fully from the 440 x 1440 screen estate.

34" might sound a lot, but as this is a 21:9 ratio it is both lower and less wide too, while packing more pixels vertically, and almost the same no of pixels horizontally as well.

I'd say everything is even more immersive, despite the curve, as a 2D game such as Campaign Series looks just ace. I play with Zoom-in 2D view, for the tactical view there's all the detail, while being able to appreciate quite a large area of the map while at it.

My full recommendations for a large curved display. I work a few days each week from home office, having this screen estate is really nice for RL as well. At the office I have a dual 23" HD set up, having everything on one large display beats it for work as well.

Here's a sample of a 2D (boardgame) view of CS Vietnam Dien Bien Phu sceanario play test game with 21:9 ratio. Attached screenshot is resized from 3440x1440 to 1600x670:

And here's a sample of a CS Middle East scenario with Zoom-in 3D (miniatures) view. Looks rather neat in wide screen too, in my humble but of course biased view:

I'm not sure what benefit a curved monitor has anyway. Not keen myself.

Many players find the immersion factor increased with a curved screen. I certainly did. Plus you see more of the map/playing area. It is not as if the video is streched.

The curve is very gentle but allows a more "natural" view than I found on a 21:9 non curved monitor.

I have an ASUS MX34VQ. 3440x1440 resolution. 100Hz refresh rate. 4ms response time.

I switched from an ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q, which was a better pure gaming monitor, but I'd never go back. I love the extra screen space for work. And the curved screen really is immersive in games.

Best monitor I've ever owned.

Queeg, that looks like a real good one plus it supports G-sync. How much does it go for?

I have a 34" LG but it's a flat monitor tv. Looks nice, I bookmarked it. Also, decent MS

How are the speakers?

I've seen it for under $700 on Amazon.

Note that it does NOT support G-Sync. It supports Free-Sync on AMD cards. On NVidia cards, it supports Adaptive Sync, which is a bit different.

Speakers are surprisingly good. They won't rock the house, but they're perfectly fine for gaming, etc.

Interesting. I always thought it was a gimmick. I will consider a curved screen next time I buy one, which will be soonish.

Interesting. I always thought it was a gimmick. I will consider a curved screen next time I buy one, which will be soonish.

I think you have to consider it as part of a broader evaluation of what you want to do with your computer and its capabilities.

I'm not sure the curve per se is superior. Rather, I think a single ultra-wide monitor is superior to dual monitors, and the curve makes a single ultra-wide monitor a bit more immersive. It's hard to describe or quantify - and I, too, thought it was a gimmick before I used one myself - but the curve does make a real difference on a wide monitor. I wouldn't want to go back.

But having said all that, you need a pretty powerful system to push an ultra-wide display, especially in flight sims or other graphic-intensive games. And many games - usually older ones but surprisingly many new ones - do not support 3440x1440 resolution. I've refunded a few games on Steam after finding they won't run except with black bands on the sides. If you can ignore the bands, then the games look and run great - but you're not using a significant portion of the monitor.

In sum, I can't see that a curved monitor adds much at 1080p resolutions. You'd be better off investing in other features, like refresh rate or G-sync. Once you get to higher resolutions, the curve is a real plus, but you may have to make other trade-offs the higher the resolution.

Depending on usage and distance it gives a more natural effect.

With strategy games and professional applications, either not that important or even negative.
A flat area is a flat area.

However with sims and FPS I would not trade in a curved screen for a flat one, especially up close with a big screen.
