P-38 Cruise Speed Change Suggestion

Post by worr »

The current cruise speeds listed for the P-38G and the P-38J respectively 185 and 195.

Compare this to the A6M2 at 203 MPH; A6M3 at 230 MP or the D3A Val at 184.

CHS has the same cruise speeds for the P-38.

US comparisons are the P-51D at 350 and the P-47D at 250.

Flight manuels put the cruise speed at 290 and 300 for the G and J.

I don't have any idea about what impact this has on the game...but it seems odd that such a reputably fast fighter would have such a slow speed. Perhaps a typo? Or a slip? It is hard to imagein the D3A competing with a P-38G in cruise.

At the very least CHS 1.7 could make this change.

Proably isn't that simple...of course. Guess the larger question is what impact does this have on the game?

I figured out that range is endurance time cruise speed. Right now 660 minutes is 11 hours.

Ferry range was 2,260 at higher altitude...but few PTO flights took place at high altitude even for ferrying.

Any aircraft can reduce speed and lean mixture to extend range....and certainly close bomber escorts slowed down even further.

Without knowing the inner workings of the air combat model:

How does cruising speed affect a fighters ability to escort bombers that have a slower cruising speed? Do the fighters (in effect) lose escort range because they have to stay in the air with the bombers, basically using up endurance time at a slower speed?

IRL, I recall reading of fighters zig-zagging around the bomber formations so they could keep their speed up while remaining with the slower bombers. Will WITP impose the same burden?
