Game Stuttering

Post by Nemo121 »

The game slows very significantly with a moderate number of units on-screen. This may simply be working as intended but based on videos of gameplay online others don't seem to experience this slowdown.

I'm including my computer benchmark and a save file demonstrating this - basically once the tomahawks are spotted and get into SAM range the game progressively slows until 1 second is taking 4 or 5 seconds on my computer.

I would appreciate if people could check the save file and see if this is just a function of missiles on screen and working as intended or if there's an issue with my computer.

I am running Windows 10 Home, 10.0.19045 Build 19045
CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X 12 core processor
RAM: 64 Gb
I run 2 x 4 K monitors and a 1080p monitor.
I have run the 4K file suggested in this tech support forum to ensure that the 4K is optimised. I only run CMO on my main 4K screen but do then often run tacview on a secondary 4K screen.

CMO Build 12422846

I have disabled all processes which CMO highlights on start as causing UI issues.
I am running CMO as administrator.
I have verified all game files, found 67 which were erroneous and corrected those.
I am not enrolled in the CMO betas.
I have disabled all Steam Overlays for CMO.

I'm just really puzzled how I can see Hypops videos and other gameplay videos which play smoothly with large battles but my system which is pretty capable doesn't seem capable of replicating that performance.

Many thanks for any help.

Your benchmark looks ok but you are not using the latest version of the game (at least in your benchmark picture) which is currently 1328.10a (1328.10.1).

I'm using a Ryzen 9 5950X. Pulse time seems to stay around 1-2ms with flashes up to 300ms at which point it stutters, there is a noticeable pauses at 1x time compression. I'm not sure if this is just because of the sheer number of missiles in the air and the amount of calculations been done. That said i have noticed that when the game stutters it does briefly call on all 16 cores cores of the CPU so i assume it's making all calculations at once. It doesn't seem to create any Exception Logs either so nothing obvious.

Yes, the comparision with 1328.10a would be interesting, this was included in the changelog.

Thanks for looking into it.

I am running the latest version now, that benchmark was a couple of weeks old. I've posted a benchmark from today below

It looks like a roughly 10% improvement in performance to me using the latest version.

I reran the scenario whilst keeping Process Lasso open to keep an eye on CPU usage. What I noticed was the following:
1. Even in normal use my computer has a preference for Cores 18 and 19. They seem to be preferentially used even when just web browsing etc. When running the scenario both showed spikes in usage but never hit 100% and total processor use never went above 23% - it is 7-8% when just typing.

What is strange though is that at most two of my cores are heavily used by the game. The other 22 are barely used. Is this normal or have I got a setting wrong? I can provide a video file showing the gameplay and the concurrent CPU usage if that would be helpful?

2. RAM usage never went above 25%, 19% at idle.

3. Responsiveness remained 100% throughout.

4. I hadn't really kept on eye on the pulse length before but now did notice that it was 1 to 2 milliseconds for most of the time but did spike to 300 to 400+ milliseconds at the times the game stuttered.

So, it seems that it may be that by doing all the calculations at the same time a stutter is created. So, would it be fair to say that this is working as designed and it just a feature that since a whole bunch of calculations are done at the same instance the game just stutters then?

It makes me wonder how people posting gameplay videos on youtube ( Like Hypops, ETG etc ) don't seem to have this problem. Are they all using Professional Edition or running it on Crays or something?

I just ran your speed test scenario and I bumped it up to x15 and it is stuttering like crazy. I went to God View and it is not like you have a lot of units on the map. Prior to 28.10 and 28.10a I would have no problem running scenarios at x5-15x with little to no stutter. Now I struggle with x2 on those same scenarios. I'm running a water cooled i9 - 9900k OC'd to 5Ghz with 32GB RAM with an RTX 2080 TI Kingpin Edition.

Not that many units i regular run 6000+, but there are a lot of TLAMs and intercept missiles that require individual calculations at the same time or in very quick succession. I've just done another run today and it actually seems worse and is stuttering even when the TLAMs are not been intercepted. Seeing 600+ ms pulse time today as well and it seems more noticable almost like a pause. Strangely it seem to stutter far less when the SAM's go up and there are more at once than in the first intercept. I guess we need a Dev to test and say if that is working correctly or not. I've added the .txt file from my latest test incase it helps.
