Blockading Small Islands

Post by MattFL »

New question came up today....

From Manual:
Port Blockade – Small islands may be blockaded by a single naval groups. All other hexes can be blockaded by 3 naval groups. To blockade a port the fleet must be 1 hex away and able to move into that port from that hex if they controlled it and have no enemy fleets next to that port as well under the same conditions.

If this statement is true, then no small island can be blockaded from the Beach hex becuase the beach hex (for whatever reason) does not allow ships to move directly from the beach to the port. The Reverse should also be true, that as a defender you can't break a blockade by sitting on the beach hex as there is no access from that hex to the port.

However, in a current game, the island is being blockaded from the beach hex. Is this an exception to the requirement that you must be able to move into a port from the blockading hex?

On this topic a few other questions:

1. Do the 3 blockading naval groups all have to be in the same hex or can they blockade say 1 group in one hex 2 groups in another hex so long as both meet the blockading requirements?

2. While it's not directly stated, the assumption is that to break a blockade requires 3+ naval groups?

Lot's of little nuances coming up that i'm trying to work through. I had been playing it such that blockading was not possible from the beach due to what the manual says so in some cases i've been wasting naval groups occupying both the beach and then a separate adjacent hex to prevent blockade.

Guidance/confirmation appreciated.

Actually a fleet in a beach hex can move directly to port from that hex. I tested it.
That would be why you can blockade from the beach.

Just move a ship to a beach and then see the movement to the port. It is 1 hex to move to port, not 2.

3 naval units do not have to be in the same hex just all 1 movement from the port. Units can also blockade multiple ports IF they are in the position to do so.

A single naval unit will break a blockade.

That's not what i show in regards to moving from beach to port (only on small islands i'm talking about). See below. While i haven't specifically tested every one, it does this for all that i have tested including all those shown in the screenshot. It is never one hex from what i've seen. And even though you can't move directly from the beach to the port (as shown) it allows blockading from there, hence wondering if this is an exception.

Good to know about a single naval unit.

Odd...I tested it and it did not do that...now it is doing that for every island.
Weird.

Well I know you can blockade from any spot adjacent to the port, at least it has always worked that way.
Maybe it should not based on the rule...but always has since I have played.

I'm trying to follow here what is wrong but I can't.

If you are next to a single island port it gets blockaded.
If the enemy has a unit next to the pot as well it is un-blockaded.

Al,

I think it was due to the wording of the manual stating...

"Fleet must be 1 hex away and able to move into that port from that hex"

SO in the screen shot the naval unit is 1 hex away - check.
BUT the unit is not able to move into that port from that hex. It has to move to another hex first as the "arrow" shows.

I suspect that is the question.
