Fort Sumter bombarded and the ACW starts in complete silence?

Post by Tanaka »

I've always wondered is the game supposed to start with cannon fire or bugles playing at game start? It's just odd that the game beings with Fort Sumter and the ACW beginning in complete silence?

For example in WAW the game begins with air raid sirens as the war starts...I noticed there are two war sounds in the sounds folder and one is not being used?

Game could use some more atmosphere no music plays when you click on the capitals like the other games? How about Star Spangled Banner on Union cap and Dixieland on Confederate cap?

I dunno. I always hear cannon fire when the Fort Sumter graphic comes up. The sound of pro-successionist crowds trashing Baltimore is a riot...literally. The ship's engine order bell sound clip used in a lot of the decision events is a nice touch too.

BTW, Sumter must be a linguistically-challenged word. When you pronounce it, the m-t combination makes it sounds as if there's a p in there when there isn't.

Hmm that is strange my game does not make a sound when the Sumter graphic pops up good to know. Let me see if checking the steam files fixes it. And yes my mistake!

Could you tell me what sound file that is in the sounds folder? Verifying files did not fix it...

Yeah, check that slider. If too far left the game is deaf.

No most of the sounds work I just noticed that the game starts in complete silence and thought it odd. No cannon sounds with the Sumter attack. Any idea which file it is so I could test?

Ok I think I figured it out as artillery attack 1. I thought I might fix it by putting all base game sounds into the sound mod I am using but still does not work. Turning off the sound mod still does not work. Very strange.

Ok so it is not just me. You can look up several YT videos of people playing the game and the cannons never sound so something is broken:

Hey the second link down is my series with The Colonel.
60 likes and 1900 views holy moly I didn't know that.
Anyways I didn't know your supposed to hear cannon shots when the splash screen event Fort Sumter is bombarded.
I honestly don't remember that in the beta either.
Btw, also..that vid is of an older version of ACW.

In my install here's a brief "ka-boom sound" when you start an 1861 campaign game as the fort Sumter graphic displays.

I had to start a new game just to notice it. Hardly seems worth the fuss.

Yes I don't think most people realize when it is not working for them. I did not realize until I mentioned how odd it is that the game starts in silence and Platoonist says his game starts with cannon shots. Seems to work for some and not for others which is very strange. It makes me wonder if there are other sounds not working and I'm wondering if it is because it is attached to an event pop up...

Hi Ryan I have finally solved the mystery. If you have the music turned off the cannon sounds do not work. Not sure why the sound effects are tied to the music?

I'll be damned! See I turn off the in-game music too and play my own thematic background music, like in all my videos. No wonder I never heard the cannon shot opener, even in the Beta. :)

I'm glad to know I wasn't just hearing things. Now, if I could only get the voices outta my head.

Haha yep! I wonder if it affects other sound effects we never knew existed? Hopefully it can be fixed!

Ok I can confirm I am hearing other sound effects I have not heard before with the music turned on now. Hopefully this can be fixed so we can play the game with our own music or music off if we choose and still enjoy the sound effects...
