MR vs J2D Spartans at Norderfurt

This is an attempt to do my first PBEM in FPG.

J2D is a long time friend and opponent and it will be good to game against him again.

Now your enemy.

Hmmm....J2D is a gamer, pure and simple. That means he won't use any tactical battle plan that would resemble anything used by the actual armies on purpose.

He will play to win with what he considers the best use of the forces he has. Historical tactics won't weigh into his use of his forces.

That can be both good and bad for me.

Tactics are designed to highlight the strengths and minimize the weaknesses of the equipment and training for that army. J2D will at times use some of those but because it makes sense to him. Not that it makes sense to some career soldier some time in the past.

The one thing that is all pervasive when fighting J2D is be prepared for anything. Sometimes he'll do things just to see how they turn out. That can be devastating to him sometimes really hurting his forces. It can be devastating to you at other times as he catches you unawares of a tactic you don't expect. Either way I expect a good fight from this match.

I respect him greatly as both a friend and a gamer.

My commanders idea of how this should take place.

Again, mostly an infantry battle.

Great, we can see how well they work on the attack. I'm doing BAOR infantry defense in my Blindly We Fight AAR so that gives me two back to back predominantly infantry battles to see how that part of the game works.

The town is all at lowest level of zero.

That means any elevation changes will disrupt his LOS.

The southern edge of my setup area is all at zero as well.

Unless I want to advance in the open terrain at zero elevation level where I can be seen the entire distance I will probably not go right at the town.

I'm going to move my forces to the west.

To the northwestern part of the hill mass. From there I will determine if I'm going to go down the hill mass or to the east or west of it.

We need to move quickly in any case. There will be NATO air and artillery to deal with and we have a ways to go to get to the town.

Most of it will be over open ground. Neither plan calls for me to move down the narrow neck of land to the east of the river.

I took no fire while moving to the west.

That means I think that I'll go with Plan One. Moving around the end of the hill mass and moving rapidly down the hill to hit the town from the west.

All the victory points are in sector 12. We just need to get into sector 12 and stay there.

We need lots of firepower to deliver to that sector!!

My spearhead is moving down the west side of the hill mass and I have encountered no fire of any kind. This is an unexpected bonus that I have not had to take losses in my approach.

The attack force will be consolidating in the southeast end of the hill. That will give NATO the chance to start to hammer my forces with artillery and air strikes. When that happens I will ram my forces at the NATO defense to get as close as possible to them. Hopefully in the same location so that they can't hit me with air and artillery.



I'm a bit surprised that J2D hasn't sent out recon elements to find me since my attack force must not be showing up on his map as detected.

The longer I get without interference the better it will be for my assault.

Finally NATO opens fire with artillery....ROFL...but way back in the back.

They hit me with a gas attack on my recon element way in the back...

And the advance continues.

I'm thinking that J2D didn't target my recon unit but his Fire Direction Center did.

We'll see.




A couple more turns without any interference and I'll have massed enough to launch my attack at the city.

The Staff Report shows where my forces are, and how strong they are in each sector. It shows we have forces in Sectors 2,3,6 and 7.

It also shows we only get victory points for having units in sector 12 at the end of the game.

Finally figured out how to do screen shots without having to shut the game all the way down. Things should look better from now on.

And just in time too because we have made contact!

As you might imagine it didn't take long for our troops to respond to the US Bradley's coming around the end of the hill.

They were immediately engaged with great success.

The M1's of the enemy force retaliated almost in the same moment and one of our tanks was taken out of the fight.

From this moment on the battle for Norderfurt has started!

The American gunnery was fast and accurate.
